Company: Gratis Internet, Inc.gratis.gif

Category: Software Development

Location: Northern California / Remote

How to Apply: careers.engineering@gratisinternet.com

Description:

We are seeking an energetic software engineer to lead our development of “social networking” applications.

The Responsibilities:

  • Building social applications on Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, Orkut, Friendster, Ning, Bebo, and Tagged.
  • Designing frameworks that enable cross-platform code reuse. For example, developing libraries that “wrap” the functionality of Facebook’s F8 and Google’s OpenSocial.
  • Attending industry conferences on social networking on behalf of Gratis Internet.

The Requirements:

  • A solid knowledge of Java, C++, C#, Python, Ruby, or any other mainstream object oriented programming language. PHP counts, but just barely.
  • We do not hire based on specific languages or technologies; instead, we expect you to quickly learn whatever tools are appropriate for the task.
  • A deep foundational knowledge of the stuff that makes the web tick: HTTP, HTML, CSS, XML, and the relational data model.
  • You are a developer, not a programmer.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a sense of humor.
  • A solid command of written and spoken English. Outstanding writing skills a plus.

The Perks:

  • Work at a company that understands and values engineers. Work from home. Use the latest hardware (from home). No unnecessary meetings. An 11/12 on The Joel Test.
  • Design BIG applications. Our social networking applications receive millions of hits per day and our databases process thousands of transactions per second.
  • Show off your work. Instead of building “a scalable data access layer with an XML-configuration engine” that only five people will ever use, build an app that all your friends can appreciate.
  • Competitive salary, benefits, and equity.

To apply, please send your resume and cover letter to: careers.engineering@gratisinternet.com with “Social Networking Application Developer” as the subject line. If selected, we will conduct a brief telephone interview, followed by a half-day technical interview.

* Let’s face it: the Bay Area is at the epicenter of the current social networking boom. Our corporate headquarters is in Washington DC, but candidates will need to attend events and conferences in Northern California. Like all remote employees, you will be expected to spend 2 weeks per year at our DC office. We also have an office in downtown San Francisco for those who don’t want to work from home.
