The Facebook Global Monitor: Tracking Facebook in Global Markets
By Justin Smith [justin at insidefacebook dot com]
- Current Edition: June 2010
|
As very close followers of Facebook’s growth and metrics, we at Inside Facebook have been absolutely astounded by Facebook’s international growth in 2009 and 2010.
At the beginning of 2008, Facebook’s international audience totaled 34 million people. By the first day of 2009, that number had increased to 95 million – making nearly 70% of the total Facebook audience. Today, this number is well over 400 million.
Dozens of these markets are still growing at double digit rates every month – and for many, those growth rates are increasing. Facebook’s growth rate accelerated by at least 25% in 47 countries in one recent quarter. Its quarterly growth rate more than doubled in 28 of those countries.
Now translated into over 100 languages, Facebook has shown that it can penetrate nearly one third of the entire national population in multiple developed markets, and we expect this to be true of many more countries in the near future.
As a result of this explosive growth, Inside Facebook has created a premium data report called the Facebook Global Monitor. The Global Monitor is designed to provide vital data and insight to media industry executives, global marketing and communications firms, analysts, and developers for whom Facebook’s rapid international expansion poses significant opportunities or threats.
Facebook Global Monitor provides a comprehensive view of Facebooks’ movement in global markets, and includes:
- The latest comprehensive data documenting Facebook’s audience expansion in nearly 100 global markets, updated monthly.
- Alerts on breakout and cooling markets
- Up-to-date in-house projections on Facebook’s growth in each country 30 days, 90 days, and 12 months into the future.
The Facebook Global Monitor is only available through Inside Facebook Gold, our data and analysis membership service. For those interested in learning more, please visit Inside Facebook Gold to see what is available in the full offering.
As always, please make suggestions if you’d like to see more attention paid to any topic. (Custom reports are also available.) You can reach us at mail AT insidefacebook DOT com with questions at any time.
We believe big opportunities exist for developers and marketers to reach and engage the Facebook audience in these rapidly emerging and expanding markets. Cheers to continued growth in 2010!

September 28th, 2010 at 9:07 am
I wonder if Facebook’s international growth has something to do with their “crowdsourcing” translation strategy. They invest very little to have their site translated very quickly into other languages.
October 21st, 2010 at 9:53 am
@hcg drops- I think they can keep this growth up. I think that anything that Google has thrown at facebook has been completely shut down aka Google Wave. People are now used to facebook and will have no incentive to switch to anything else because they are comfortable and people love to get into a comfort zone and stay there. I think that facebook implementing it’s own search engine to compete with Google won’t work unless they really advance it. Needless to say the search engine inside facebook right now is terrible.
