Bug briefly leads sites with Facebook login and plugins to render error message

A bug temporarily led all third-party websites that use Facebook login or social plugins to redirect users to Facebook.com where an error message displayed earlier today.

A spokesperson for the social network said in a statement:

“For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third-party sites to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual.”

The issue lasted about 30 minutes or less, according to what we can gather from when users tweeted about the problem. Users who were not logged into Facebook were not affected. The issue also did not cause any problems for Facebook’s own domain.

Although brief, the bug was significant because of its scope. With so many sites incorporating Facebook, from login to the comments plugin or even a simple Like button, a small mistake could affect a lot of people and businesses. More than 10 million apps and websites connect with the Facebook platform, the company shared last week. Issues like the one today are a reminder for many developers, publishers and companies that integrating with Facebook — or for that matter, Google, Amazon Web Services or any third party — means sometimes their properties are not in their control.
