New page post targeting options coming to all Facebook pages over 5,000 Likes

Facebook page owners with more than 5,000 fans will soon have access to advanced post targeting options including age, gender, relationship status and education.

Facebook began testing this last month, but only a small percentage of pages had access to the additional targeting parameters. Today some marketers received an update from Facebook saying that all pages over 5,000 Likes will get the option this week. Our own InsideFacebook.com page showed the following prompt this afternooon:

As mentioned in the image above, page post targeting will only apply to News Feed distribution. All posts will remain visible from the page’s Timeline. This will allow the friends of fans who don’t meet the targeting criteria to see stories about their friends Liking or commenting on the post.

The change gives page owners more control over the messages they share to different subsets of their audience. If pages take advantage of the feature, users will see more relevant content, which could reduce the number of fans who unsubscribe to posts or unlike pages. It could also help pages increase the Talking About This metric by allowing admins to create multiple posts per day without overwhelming fans.
