Calendars, Quizzes, Spotify, Christmas, The Independent and More on This Week’s Top 20 Growing Facebook Apps by MAU

Calendar applications were popular on our list of apps growing by monthly active users this week. There were also some quiz apps, Spotify, a Christmas app, The Independent newspaper, photos, tabs and JibJab. The titles on our list gained the most MAU of any apps on the platform, growing from between 440,000 and 15.3 million MAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering traffic growth for apps on Facebook.

Calendar apps on the list included: MyCalendar – Birthdays with 15.3 million MAU, MiCalendario – Cumpleaños with 7.7 million MAU, 我的日历 – 生日 with 2 million MAU, Il Mio Calendario – Compleanni with 1.9 million MAU, MonCalendrier – Anniversaires with 900,000 MAU and Takvimime with 699,700 MAU. These apps allow users to create a customized birthday calendar with friends’ birthdays, but first must invite others to use the app.

Then there were two quiz apps on the list, 21 Preguntas with 3.2 million MAU and 21 Perguntas with 1.7 million MAU.

Other apps included Spotify with 600,000 MAU, JibJab with 500,000 MAU and Mis Fotos with 500,000 MAU also, this app generates feed stories when users interact with friends’ photos. Tab app Static HTML Iframe Tab : Custom Icons grew by 500,000 MAU, newspaper app The Independent grew by 500,000 MAU and Merry Christmas | Feliz Navidad with 440,000 MAU publishes a photo with a user’s friends as ornaments, tagging them and also publishing a feed story.

Facebook Fixes Photo Bug – Facebook acknowledged a problem that occurred, allowing users to see others’ private photos, and then fixed the glitch, according to ZDNet.

Facebook Offers Special Ad Tracking to Some – TechCrunch reported that Facebook has been providing top advertisers with special downstream conversion tracking by installing a pixel on an advertiser’s conversion page.

Facebook Sues Timelines.com – Facebook has counter-sued Timelines.com after that company sued the social network over its use of the word “timeline.” Facebook filed a suit to strip Timelines.com of its trademarks, claiming the are too generic.

GroSocial Releases Customizer for Pages – GroSocial released a white-label program allowing users to offer customers a branded version of GroSocial’s Customizer for Pages this week.

Intuit Releases SimpleStore for Facebook – Intuit released its social commerce app SimpleStore for Facebook this week, allowing business owners to simply sell goods on their Facebook Pages.

Making Open Graph Apps International-Ready

Facebook has posted a walkthrough that illustrates how apps built in Open Graph can be translated into various languages (a.k.a. making your app “I18N-ready”).

As the social network expands beyond the United States into global markets — which make up an estimated 75% of Facebook’s audience — localization becomes a key to developer success on the platform. Facebook has been increasingly aware of the need for translation and localization tools for developers, recently experimenting with a Microsoft Bing-powered “Translate” feature that allows users to view Page posts in their native language.

Automatically translating apps into various languages, however, is a function that can be performed in Open Graph. Developers need only apply Open Graph meta tags to objects with specific locales so that the app returns the correct strings for that locale. In the example posted,  Facebook demonstrates how the meta tags would be applied to translate an Open Graph object into French and Spanish:

Once the strings are returned and the object locales declared, the translation process continues in one of three ways:

  1. Inline by users of the app viewing translatable strings by the app.

Christmas applications continued to be popular on our list of those emerging as measured by monthly active users this week. There were also Page tab apps, chat apps, card apps and a calendar app. The apps on our list grew from between 100,000 and 490,000 MAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering traffic growth for apps on Facebook. We define emerging applications as those that ended with between 100,000 and 1 million MAU in the past week.

Voxer Walkie Talkie is an app that lets users chat with their friends on Facebook, growing by 400,000 MAU this week, topping the list. But the apps dominating growth this week were Christmas apps.

Merry Christmas | Feliz Navidad grew by 370,000 MAU and publishes a photo with a user’s friends as ornaments, tagging them and also publishing a feed story. My Christmas Tree 2011 grew by 150,000 MAU and lets users send friends a Christmas tree ornament in a box. Mi árbol de Navidad 2011 grew by 140,000 MAU and allows users to send virtual gifts to friends. Greeting Cards grew by 110,000 MAU and Fun Cards – Christmas & More! by 100,000 MAU; these apps typically allow users to select friends in bulk to send cards to.

Tab apps were Welcome Tab with 160,000 MAU and Woobox Custom Tab | Star #2 with 160,000 MAU. Then calendar apps included MinKalender – Bursdag with 130,000 MAU and MinKalender – Fødselsdage with 120,000 MAU. Social network app Path grew by 130,000 MAU, Connect humor website 9GAG by 120,000 MAU and the text special effect app Text Effects grew by 110,000 MAU.

Facebook’s Subscribe Button for Websites is Now Live

Less than a day after announcing it was introducing a version of its “Subscribe” button for websites, Facebook has taken the new feature live.

According to a post on the Facebook developer blog, the new button has the same functionality as it does on Facebook, with a subscriber seeing the public posts of the person they subscribed to appear in their News Feed. In addition, the new Subscribe action is also shared to friends of the subscriber, so anyone who sees that update will also be able to Subscribe to someone’s public posts via their News Feed.

The subscribe button is already live on a number of websites such as Absolute Radio, The Daily Beast, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post and Time.com. The HTML5, iframe and XFBML versions of the Subscribe button’s code are now available to everyone on the developer blog post.

Facebook Hires and Departures: Engineering, Counsel, Client Partners and More

Facebook hired engineers and Patent Counsel this week, at least it appears so according to posts removed from its Careers Page and listed on the company’s LinkedIn feed.

Birthday calendars topped our list this week. MyCalendar – Birthdays grew by 3.6 million DAU, Birthday Calendar grew by 3 million DAU, 我的日历 – 生日 by 1.2 million DAU and MiCalendario – Cumpleaños by 640,000 DAU. These apps require users to invite friends before use, and may secure growth that way.

Then a pair of quiz apps made the list, in Spanish and Portuguese. 21 Preguntas which grew by 810,000 DAU and 21 Perguntas with 430,00 DAU. These types of apps usually ask users to answer questions about friends, then publish feed stories with answers.

The middle of the list was made up of a mixed bag of apps. Bing’s app grew by 600,000 MAU, Yahoo grew by 560,000 DAU, Pandora by 500,000 DAU, Spotify by 500,000 DAU and MyPad for iPad by 400,000 DAU. The photo sharing app, Mis Fotos, grew by 350,000 DAU; the app generates feed stories when users interact with friends’ photos. Then Microsoft Live grew by 300,000 DAU; the app is a Windows Messenger integration.

The end of the list was taken up by four different apps that are the same thing. Greeting Cards grew by 240,000 DAU, Greetings by 240,000 DAU, Greeting Cards by 220,000 DAU and Greeting Cards by 210,000 DAU. The app is a Connect integration to myfriendsgreetings.com showing friends with upcoming birthdays, and allowing users to select from different types of cards, ex: Christmas, New Year, Kwanzaa, etc.
