Musicians Find More Value on Facebook Than Other Networks

Musicians believe Facebook Likes are three times more valuable connections on other social networks, according to a survey by ReverbNation and Digital Music News.

The survey asked more than 2,000 musicians to think about the value of various social connections — Facebook Likes, Twitter followers, mailing list subscribers, among others — and distribute 100 points amongst them to indicate relative value. Facebook came out far ahead of other social networks, likely because of its ability to share a range of media types with fans and their friends.

As music apps and websites integrate with Open Graph, Facebook is likely to expand its influence as a place for people to share and discover new music. The social network introduced a dedicated music dashboard in September to let users see which albums, songs and artists are trending among their friends. With the recently launched Timeline, users can now feature the music they’ve listened to most recently and most commonly over certain time periods.

Musicians have long been active on social networking sites and they account for some of the most popular pages on Facebook. The 250 most popular artists on Facebook have a combined total of more than 2 billion Likes, according to recent information provided by RootMusic, makers of BandPage. Of those artists, 89% use music apps on their pages and 88% add new content to their Wall each week. On average, the Top 250 artists each post to their pages 1.6 times a day.

Facebook Brings Timeline Functionality to Android, Mobile Touch Site

Facebook has launched Timeline on its Android app and m.facebook.com for touch devices after introducing the new profile to users worldwide late Wednesday night.

Note: There is not a set release date for Timeline in the iOS app, but Facebook tells us it is coming in an update soon. iOS apps must go through an approval process before entering Apple’s App Store.

The mobile Timeline is a visual and navigational improvement over the old profile. Users can easily scroll through past posts, which now feature larger photos and the ability to swipe horizontally to see additional content without leaving the Timeline. The mobile version allows users to browse all of the rich content in the new profile format and to hide or delete items, but there are fewer controls for editing the Timeline than the full website provides.

For example, mobile users can change their cover photo, but they cannot edit the About section of their profile. They cannot star posts to feature them more prominently, as is possible on Facebook.com, nor can they change the privacy settings of an existing post. Mobile users are also unable to add “life events” or make posts that are dated in the past. This means they cannot use the mobile map add places they have been before. These actions, however, are likely better suited for the web experience when users have more screen space and are likely to be spending more time on the site.

The mobile Timeline also features Open Graph app activity. Tapping on a Washington Post Social Reader item, for instance, opens a new browser window with a mobile version of the app. Tapping on a Spotify item will open the native app if it is installed on the device.

Timeline Goes Live for Users Around the World

Facebook’s new Timeline profile began rolling out to users in several countries on Wednesday night. It appears that typing “Timeline” in the Facebook search bar returns a result for “Introducing Timeline,” which leads to a page explaining the new format and providing an option to upgrade.

Facebook launched Timeline in New Zealand last week, but did not provide a worldwide release date. We are awaiting details from Facebook about the scope of today’s launch, but according to a message displayed when users request to preview the new layout, Timeline will go live on Dec. 21. This gives users a week to preview their Timelines before making them visible to friends and others. [Update 12/15/2011 10:20am PST: Facebook clarified that the opt-in period for Timeline will last for a few weeks. However, from the time users activate the new profile, they will have seven days to review their content before anyone else will see it. If users want to publish their timelines right away, they can.]

[Update 12/15/2011 8:15am PST: Facebook has confirmed the global launch of Timeline. Starting today the new profile will also be available on Android and m.facebook.com. For more information about the changes, see Inside Facebook's complete walk-through of Timeline.]

After debuting the product at F8 in September, Facebook gave developers access to a beta version. Early adopters found a way to sign up as a developer and test Timeline for themselves, and according to a post on TechCrunch, more than a million users took advantage of this option.

Facebook Asks How Well You Know Your Friends

Facebook is asking some users to provide information about how well they know the people they are connected to so that the social network can show users more relevant and interesting content.

In a unit on the right sidebar of the site, Facebook asks, “How well do you know [friend’s name]?” Multiple-choice options follow.

This research question is yet another example of how Facebook has been experimenting to improve relevance of the News Feed through algorithms and direct user feedback. As people connect with more pages and people and share more information, whether through mobile updates or Open Graph activity, Facebook must provide a manageable and worthwhile News Feed experience.

In September, Facebook combined the Top News and Recent Stories filters into a single feed. Users can now highlight stories to let Facebook know they want to see more items like those, and they can un-highlight stories they feel Facebook has mistakenly marked as important. With the new subscribe feature, users can also indicate the type of updates they want to see or not see from their friends and people they follow.

While average user will not spend much, if any, time organizing their friends or News Feeds, more advanced users will appreciate the control Facebook is offering.

Zendesk Brings Facebook into its Help Desk Application

Help desk software provider Zendesk has added Facebook integration to its cloud-based platform. Posts and comments to a company Facebook page now enter the system as tickets that can be routed to the appropriate customer service agent.

Most companies are still trying to determine who should be involved in managing their Facebook pages. With uses for marketing, PR and customer service among others, it can be difficult to decide who should be in charge and how different departments and agencies should work together. Several SaaS companies are looking to address these issues with social media management platforms.

Zendesk aims to streamline customer support across the web with a ticket system that allows users to keep track of customer communications and automate some aspects of the process. The application already integrates with Twitter and CRM solutions like Salesforce.com, in addition to bringing email and website feedback into a single platform.

Since being founded in 2007, Zendesk has gained more than 10,000 customers, including Adobe, MSNBC, Sony, OpenTable and Groupon.
