TL;DR: Facebook Increases Status Update Character Limit From 5K to 60K+

Facebook said today that it has increased the maximum character count in status updates to over 60,000. This is 12 times the original character count of 5,000. The change was originally spotted by All Facebook on a post on the Facebook+Journalists Page.

The longer status updates appear in the Live Ticker the same as any other status update truncated after a certain character limit is reached (which looks to be about 80), but it truncates in News Feed after 400 characters. As TechCrunch’s Josh Constine points out in our own experimentation with the new character limit, Facebook prompts users to create a Note if the character limit exceeds 63,206:

Longer status updates help differentiate the feature from Tweets and potentially create space for new content types from users. For example, in the announcement post Facebook suggests that a user could share a novel on Facebook in nine status update posts using the new character limit. Users that practice collaborative writing, say for a college essay writing course or something, could now use Facebook as writing workshop space.

A more interesting question is whether or not post length will factor into the GraphRank algorithm that determines post placement in the News Feed. While the character cut off in News Feed will prevent long form posts from pushing other News Feed stories farther down the page, it could be that users are attracted to longer posts that seem to have something important to say.

How did Facebook arrive at the 63,206 character limit? According to Facebook engineer Bob Baldwin, “I set the exact limit to something nerdy. Facebook … Face Boo K … hex(FACE) – K … 64206 – 1000 = 63206 :-)”.

Facebook Highlighting More Early Results for Social News Apps

Facebook posted early results from new integrations with news outlets launched during f8, showing a significant increase in traffic to news stories posted via social news applications.

Facebook yesterday highlighted set of partner news organizations including Yahoo! News, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily and The Huffington Post. Each outlet is exploring different social news application possibilities; some are integrating apps on their own sites, while others are integrating directly into Facebook or using Facebook Connect. Applications use Open Graph to share what people are reading on the various networks on the Timeline – stories which, as The Wall Street Journal notes, often date back to the 1990s.

Our AppData traffic tracking service shows most of the applications have at least doubled readership in the last month. The Independent has increased its DAU by 130,000 in the last seven days. Its MAU has increased by 1.1 million this month, now reaching 1.5 million. The Guardian grew its MAU from 1.4 million to 3.4 million this month. According to Facebook, Yahoo! News has seen a 600% increase in traffic. The Daily is the only partner not specifically mentioned in Facebook’s blog post, likely due to its decrease in MAU from 6,000 to 4,000.

The Washington Posts Social Reader app now has over 3.5 million monthly active users, 83% of which are younger than 35 years old according to Facebook. By automatically posting who is reading what to the Timeline — a sign to users that friends are indeed actively reading the news — Facebook encourages friend-endorsed consumption without any extra clicks or user interface.

We generally expect to see more news organizations building similar social news apps in the coming months to take advantage of the opportunities to integrate with the Timeline and Ticker.

Facebook Reveals Most Shared Articles in 2011

Facebook has posted a Most Shared Articles on Facebook in 2011 Page that links more often to parenting-related topics, human interest pieces and odd trivia stories than it does to the major news stories of the year.

The story type that appears most often on the list of 40 articles is parenting advice and parenting-related stories reported by CNN, The Washington Post, Yahoo News, The Wall Street Journal, and The Huffington Post. Another popular theme is the change in zodiac sings, which first gained media traction in late 2010 before spilling over into early 2011. A slightly less popular theme is the late Steve Jobs — but given that it’s a more recent development in the year, it comes as no surprise that people had less time to circulate the story through Facebook.

The number one most-shared story, however, was a top news item — a New York Times photo gallery of Japan before and after the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Several other quake news stories and human interest stories about the tragedy also appear on the list.

Facebook itself also gets a bit of attention at No.7 with a CNN story on Timeline, announced at f8.

Stories are shared on Facebook both directly from the story source itself, with the aid of a Facebook button, and from within Facebook’s News Feed and user Walls where a “Share” option will appear if the user posting the link to the story has the option enabled in their privacy settings.

Facebook Settles Federal Trade Commission Charges That It Tricked Users on Privacy Settings

The Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement with Facebook this morning over charges that the social network deceived users by failing to honor privacy agreements.

Under the agreement, Facebook:

  • cannot misrepresent the privacy or security of users personal information;
  • must get user consent before releasing changes that override existing privacy settings;
  • must prevent people from accessing a user’s material no more than 30 days after that user has deleted their account;
  • has to establish and maintain a privacy program that addresses risks that come with “the development and management” of products and services and that protects the privacy of user’s information;
  • and — within 180 days and every two years afterward for the next 20 — must seek out third-party audits verifying that the privacy program is in place and that it satisfies the FTC’s order.

The agreement comes nearly two years after the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation raised concerns over Facebook’s 2009 changes to its privacy settings that exposed personal information — namely profile name, profile picture, list of friends, current city, gender, networks, and Pages — to a larger audience than the social network previously allowed. Earlier in 2011, it was reported that Facebook would settle with the FTC over charges that these changes deceived users and violated their privacy — making any changes that retroactively expose user data an opt-in instead of a mandatory change.

At this point, Facebook would have to take pretty intentional steps against the terms of the agreement to cause the FTC to pursue action against it again. In the last year alone, Facebook has also added or changed many features that affect privacy in ways that address the FTC’s complaint — like protecting user IDs from falling into the wrong hands.

In a Facebook response post to the agreement, Mark Zuckerberg says that he feels the platform has a positive track record for providing transparency and control over privacy settings.

“That said,” his post reads, “I’m the first to admit that we’ve made a bunch of mistakes. In particular, I think that a small number of high profile mistakes, like Beacon four years ago and poor execution as we transitioned our privacy model two years ago, have often overshadowed much of the good work we’ve done. I also understand that many people are just naturally skeptical of what it means for hundreds of millions of people to share so much personal information online, especially using any one service.  Even if our record on privacy were perfect, I think many people would still rightfully question how their information was protected. It’s important for people to think about this, and not one day goes by when I don’t think about what it means for us to be the stewards of this community and their trust.”

Zuckerberg also announced that Erin Egan will become Chief Privacy Officer, Policy and that Michael Richter will become Chief Privacy Officer, Products.

During a media call in session with the FTC, Chairman Jon Leibowitz, Bureau of Consumer Protection Deputy Director Jessica Rich, Division of Privacy and Identity Protection Associate Director Maneesha Mithal, and Division of Privacy and Identity Protection Staff Attorney Laura Berger explained carefully that the settlement does not count as a ruling that Facebook violated the law in changing its privacy settings or that it knowingly shared private user data with advertisers. They also stressed that, while this order is very broad, it prohibits any deception about privacy in the future whenever Facebook introduces changes or updates.

Announcing Inside Virtual Goods: Tracking the US Virtual Goods Market 2011 – 2012

With an up-to-$2 billion IPO that Zynga may file in the coming weeks to fund its continued global expansion, Facebook’s migration to Credits, Google’s launch of Google+, and the continued rapid growth of in-app purchase-based businesses on the iOS and Android mobile platforms, virtual goods are impacting businesses across the media landscape. Virtual goods, and the companies that distribute them, are continuing to bring about one of the largest disruptions entertainment, communication, and e-commerce infrastructure businesses have seen in years.

Inside Network is proud to announce a new original research report by Charles Hudson and Justin Smith that presents a comprehensive examination of the size and future of the virtual goods market in the United States, entitled Inside Virtual Goods: The US Virtual Goods Market 2011 – 2012. This is Inside Network’s third annual edition of the US Virtual Good Market report. It will be released on December 6, but is available for discount pre-order now.

Where will the virtual goods market go in 2012 and what are the biggest opportunities left unclaimed? How will existing players fare as Facebook, Apple, and Google reshape the mobile gaming landscape, and larger and more sophisticated players enter the market? Inside Virtual Goods: The US Virtual Goods Market 2011 – 2012 provides deeper insight into monetization, development, and the key questions facing the space in 2012 than you’ll find anywhere else.

About the Report

Inside Virtual Goods is a new report researched and created specifically for entrepreneurs, investors, and analysts interested in the growth of this exciting new category of online commerce that is fueling the growth of games-as-a-service businesses. During a research phase spanning the last few months, co-authors Justin Smith and Charles Hudson have spoken with dozens of executives and entrepreneurs from all parts of the ecosystem in order to form what we believe are the most detailed estimates, analyses, and predictions for 2011 and 2012.

We focused and organized the report around the following areas:

  1. Social Networks, Applications, and Games - The continued growth of the virtual goods market on social networks is one of the biggest stories of 2011. We delve deeply into the trends, stats, key players, opportunities, and challenges facing the space this year and next.
  2. Mobile Applications and Games – Mobile application developers that have been early adopters of the free-to-play model are have seen significant growth in 2011, making mobile the fastest-growing component of the US virtual goods market. Our study breaks down the key opportunities and challenges facing this emerging space going into 2012.
  3. Casual  and Hardcore MMOs - Developers in the MMO / MMORPG space have been among the earliest adopters of the free-to-play model, while Virtual worlds and casual MMOs continue to represent a share of the virtual goods opportunity in the United States. Our study breaks down the key trends in monetization and engagement, and the prospects for the future.
  4. Console Games – The console market continues to be one of the areas where microtransactions are establishing a meaningful foothold in the market. We explore why the model is succeeding, revenue and user trends, and the key issues facing this space as we head into 2012.

Each section contains:

  1. A brief history on the evolution and growth of this space in the US, including a description of key players.
  2. Estimates on the size of the US virtual goods market in 2011 in that area.
  3. A diagnosis of the key opportunities and issues facing the growth of that space, including our outlook and projections for 2012.

In addition, prior to delving more deeply into each market segment, we’ve provided an overview of the emerging payments ecosystem that is growing to serve these new businesses. Traditional e-commerce infrastructure providers only offer a partial solution, and the virtual goods payments layer is currently in a major state of flux. In the report, we describe the variety of solutions that have been brought to market to date, and the key challenges facing the industry from a payments perspective as a whole.
