Facebook Adds Page Admin Bookmarks With Notification Counters to the Home Page

Facebook is currently rolling out a change to the home page of Page administrators. They’ll now or soon see a dedicated, persistently visible section in the left sidebar that displays bookmarks for each Page they admin, with each bookmark showing a counter denoting the number of pending notifications about activity for the Page such as new Likes and wall posts.

The Page admin home page bookmarks and counters should encourage admins to visit their Pages more frequently and more actively engage their fan communities by providing a constant visual reminder. Previously, the general bookmark for “Pages” could end up buried amongst bookmarks for apps.

Facebook has added several new ways for admins to access their Page notifications. In February, it added the “Use Facebook as Page” option so admins could navigate the site under the alias of one of their Pages and see its notifications in the top navigation bar the way users see personal notifications. In April it began showing a link and counter for notifications in the admin panel on Pages, and it May it let admins get a snapshot of growth and notifications for all their Pages in the Pages Dashboard.

Now, admins can click the Page bookmarks in the left sidebar to visit the corresponding Page, where they can view specific notifications through the link on the admin panel. If admins hover over the title of the Page bookmarks section in the left sidebar they’ll see a “More” link that leads to the Pages Dashboard. If someone is an admin of a large number of Pages, it appears that up to 10 are shown above the fold, and the rest can be accessed through the Pages Dashboard. Up to 99 notifications can be denoted in the counters.

By surfacing Page notifications counters on the home page, Facebook may be able to make responding to user comments and wall posts a habit for Page admins the way checking friend requests and personal notifications is for users. This could help improve moderation for Pages and encourage businesses to make them a more central component of their online marketing strategy. This could in turn boost the volume of Facebook ads bought to grow Pages.

“Around The Web” Feature on Facebook Pages Shows Foursquare, Other Location Links

Some Facebook Places Pages for local businesses and locations are now showing an “Around The Web” panel listing of links to corresponding venue pages of the sites of Facebook’s Places partners: Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, SCVNGR, and Booyah. These links could help businesses drive traffic and checkins to their other online presences.

Foursquare tells us its inclusion in Around The Web is not part of its official partnership with Facebook. Therefore the feature may simply be designed to provide useful information to Facebook users, rather than signaling a deepening of Facebook’s existing Places partnerships, or the fulfillment of terms of the original partnership announced a year ago.

Third-Party Location Service Links

Beneath the profile picture and navigation menu of some Places Pages that list a street address, such as San Francisco’s Bender’s Bar & Grill, there is a now an Around The Web panel. It displays links to any existing venue pages on other location services for the business or location represented by the Facebook Page.

If users click through their links, the third-party venue pages may show them public tips and photos, as well as if any Facebook friends have checked in there if the user has their Facebook account connected to the the site. Facebook Places Pages typically only show checkins, photos and other content from a user’s friends. The public data from these third-party sites could help users get a more accurate feel for a location, especially if they don’t have any friends who’ve checked in to the location before.

Around The Web will remind users to check in to the location on the service of their choice next time they’re nearby. The links may also help businesses attain more redemptions of deals they run to incentivize checkins on these third-party services.

Not Part of Official Partnerships

We’ve reached out to Facebook several times over the last week regarding how admins can add the Around The Web panel to their Pages, but haven’t received a response. The Pages we’ve seen with “Around The Web” have all been unclaimed Places. Our test of adding a third-party venue page to the website field of a claimed Facebook Places Page did not cause the panel to appear. Facebook may only testing the feature with a small number of certain types of Pages, but may choose to roll it out further in the future.

When Facebook launched Places last August it announced partnerships with Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, and Booyah. Users of these partnered services can opt to syndicate their checkins to Facebook. The presence of partner logos and links to their sites on Facebook Pages is a bit of a surprise though, as Facebook rarely links offsite except as part of news feed stories about content contributed by third-parties.

Foursquare says its inclusion in the feature “isn’t part of a formal agreement between our companies,” but may use data from it’s Venues Project API that is designed to help share info about locations between different websites.

Facebook’s willingness to include links to other location services on Page may mean it doesn’t consider them a threat to Places. This contrasts with how it perceives Google+, considering Facebook recently forbid game developers from linking to Google’s new social network.

Featured Facebook Campaigns: Dunkin’ Nation, UNO, Notruf Deutschland, “The Big Lebowski” and Publishers Clearing House

Credits, free money and fear were used by different brands this week to attract more Likes, customers and promote brand loyalty. Dunkin Donuts, UNO and Publishers Clearing House lured users with free money while the German crime show Notruf Deutschland utilized a user’s profile to instill fear in them. Finally, Milyoni’s new Social Theater app lets users buy movies right on Facebook.

Be President of Dunkin’ Nation

Goal: Network Exposure, Page Growth, Product Purchase

Core Mechanic: Dunkin’ Donuts is combining a promotion on its Page with check-in services from Facebook and Foursquare to give away prizes.

Method: Users may check in once an hour up to 10 times per day from one of the location services after registering on the Facebook Page in order to win. Participants who check in often enough may be crowned the “President of Dunkin’ Nation” and other users are eligible to win a daily sweepstakes of prizes including an LCD TV, gift cards, t-shirts, mugs and more.

Impact: The promotion begins today and runs until September 23.

Milyoni’s Social Theater Screening of “The Big Lebowski”

Goal: Product Purchase, Brand Loyalty

Core Mechanic: A Facebook purchase of a movie from the Page that may be viewed an unlimited amount of times in a 48 hours period.

Method: Users simply visit the film’s Facebook Page, click on the Social Theater (beta) tab and then agree to purchase the film with Facebook Credits. Buyers have the chance to share their purchase to the stream and save five of their friends  $1 dollar off the rental price of $3, or 30 Credits.

Impact: Facebook says the Watch The Big Lebowski app has 296 MAU, which isn’t necessarily bad given that it’s a movie rental and it’s currently in beta. The app is part of Milyoni’s new Social Theater app.

Friend Quizzes, Page Tabs, Photos, Music, Calendar and Dating on This Week’s Top 20 Facebook Apps by MAU

Friend quizzes continued to be popular on our list of growing Facebook applications as measured by monthly active users this week. There were also a few Page tab applications, and the Are YOU Interested? dating app, a photo app, calendar and BandPage by RootMusic. The titles on our list gained the most MAU of any apps on the platform, growing from between 464,800 and 4.7 million MAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering traffic growth for apps on Facebook.

21 questions grew by 2.8 million MAU this week, Truth Game by 966,700 MAU, Between You and Me grew by 906,300 MAU, Truths About You by 795,200 MAU and Get Revealed grew by 679,600 MAU. Each of these friend quiz apps basically does the same thing, asking the user questions about their friends, then posting the answer either to the user’s Wall or to that of their friend.

Page tab apps on our list this week included Static HTML: iframe tabs with 1.8 million MAU, Welcome Tab with 1.3 million, Static Iframe Tab with 512,700 MAU and iwipa: HTML + iframe + FBML with 503,800 MAU.

MyCalendar grew by 1.8 million MAU this week; the app asks users to invite their friends to use the app before using it. Are YOU Interested? is a dating app that grew by 1.2 million MAU.  BandPage by RootMusic grew by 531,700 MAU. Finally, Photos + grew by 464,800 MAU.

German Privacy Office Condemns Like Button – The privacy office of Northern German state Schleswig-Holstein has called for a ban of the Like button on grounds that it violates user privacy by sending browsing behavior data to Facebook. Facebook Publishes Security Guide – Facebook has published “A Guide to Facebook Security”, a 20-page .PDF written by security researchers designed to teach Facebook users how to protect themselves. It outlines how to avoid common scams, use Facebook’s security features, and explains that hackers might pretend to be popular apps like FarmVille, but Zynga and other developers aren’t to blame.

Facebook Zip Code Ad Targeting InaccuraciesClickZ reports that some early tests by Ads API developer XA.net indicate that in some cases Facebook may be showing that the expected audience for ads targeted to a specific zip code is higher than the census population for that zip code. This could be due to inaccuracy in how Facebook assigns users a zip code based on the city they list in their profile or where the site believes their IP address is located.

Sony’s PSVita to Include Facebook – Sony’s Vita handheld game console will include Facebook and other social apps when or soon after it launches, according to Electronista. The apps will be available for free on the PlayStation store.

Milyoni’s Facebook Credits for Video Rentals App Ups Virality With Live Commenting and Scene Sharing

Facebook ecommerce developer Milyoni has added new sharing features to its Social Theater app that lets Pages rent videos to users for Facebook Credits. Social Theater, which powers rentals for Warner Bros’ The Dark Knight and the ACL music festival, now allows users to leave timed comments, share specific scenes, chat live with other viewers, Like brands mentioned in the film, and send discounts on rentals to friends. These improvements can now be seen on the Page for film The Big Lebowski, will enhance the Social Theater user experience, and could help instances of the app spread virally across Facebook, increasing sales for content owners.

Milyoni got the attention of the ecommerce and media worlds when Warner Bros first announced it would rent films from its Facebook Page using Social Theater, and would allow users to pay with Facebook Credits. While it opened a new revenue stream to video content owners, we criticized the app for lacking many of the social feature it added this week. Without these, Social Theater wasn’t taking full advantage of Facebook’s communication channels and built-in audience, hampering sales.

The ecommerce developer has since raised $3 million in Series A funding and partnered with Page management company Vitrue to help brands drive direct return on investment on their social media efforts. It’s also been tapped to power on-Facebook rentals of concerts as well as more Warner Bros films including Inception and Harry Potter. Now it is debuting Social Theater 2.0 with rentals of cult hit The Big Lebowski from the film’s Facebook Page.

Once users opt to rent the film they’re shown a landing page with Like and Send buttons for sharing the app with friends, and a Like Box so they can become a fan of the film’s Page. Users then confirm that they’ll pay 30 Facebook Credits, or $3, for 48 hours of unlimited viewing of the film. They’re giving the option to post a link to the walls of friends that lets them get a $1 discount on renting the film.

While watching the film without going into full-screen mode, they see timed comments — text tied to a certain moment in the film —  written by other viewers scroll across the screen. They can add their own comments that are also published to Facebook, though this syndication could be made more explicit to the user.

At certain moments in the film users are are shown prompts to share scenes or popular quotes from to the film to the news feed. This content can be consumed for free by friends right from the news feed, and entices them to click through and rent the film themselves. Users also prompts to Like the Pages related to the film or of brands mentioned in the film, so users get a chance to Like the Page of the film’s main character “The Dude”, and when he asks for a drink of Kahlua, users have the option to Like the alcohol brand.

On the backend, Milyoni has implemented an efficient self-serve admin system that for deployment of the app in less than 24 hours. Admins can also customize pricing, promotion, and app layout.

Social Theater 2.0 is much more engaging and viral than the first version Milyoni launched with The Dark Knight. It gives users a unique, social viewing experience in which they can easily share compelling content and discounts on rentals with friends, and subscribe to updates about the film and related Pages. These elements should allow content owners who license Social Theater to secure more rentals, and help Milyoni turn one-time renters into repeat sales across deployments of its app.

Facebook Tries Replacing “Most Recent” with a “Ticker” Real-Time Feed Atop the Chat Sidebar

For the past few months, Facebook has been testing several home page redesigns that add a second, real-time news feed to the right of the central Top News feed. In the latest tested design, Facebook has removed the Most Recent tab of the news feed and replaced it with a real-time activity feed that is displayed at the top of the Chat sidebar.

This design may feel more familiar to users since it leaves birthdays, upcoming events, and ads in their traditional place to the left. However, the design reduces above-the-fold real estate for the buddy list such that might have to do more scrolling to find friends to Chat with. It also makes ads less prominent and thus less valuable than a previous real-time feed design that kept ads visible no matter where on the home page a user scrolled.

Testing Different Designs

Facebook has long been rumored to be searching for a design of the home page that would do away with the two tab news feed, as some users never click away from the default Top News feed to view the Most Recent real-time feed. By showing both feeds at the same time the site could make sure the home page always displays both highly compelling older stories as well as fresh content, drawing more time-on-site from both those just quickly checking Facebook and those who’ve already read all their Top News.

In June we spotted the first of the new two-feed designs called “Happening Now”, which replaced the right side of the home page’s upcoming events and birthdays with a feed of text-only real-time activity stories about the actions of friends, such as “Eric Eldon posted a link”. These entries could be clicked to reveal an overlay displaying the full, rich media news feed story. Some users complained about losing easy access to birthdays, upcoming events, and the rich media Most Recent feed that helped them find posts related to the social games they played.

Later that month, we saw another design that kept the left navigation sidebar and the right live-feed sidebar fixed but let users scroll their central news feed, which itself first showed Top News stories and then further down showed Most Recent stories. Similar the the previous design, this could help Pages get more impressions for their news feed posts, but would also give more exposure to ads and let users access the top and left navigation bars at any time. However, users might have been jarred by only being able to scroll the central feed.

Facebook has confirmed the tests multiple times over the last couple months, saying “We are currently testing a feature within News Feed that gives people the ability to see what their friends are commenting on and ‘liking,’ as these actions are being taken on Facebook. This test includes a small percentage of Facebook users, just a fraction of a percent. In the coming weeks, as we learn more from this test, we’ll keep making improvements and may expand it to more people.”

Now, Facebook has combined elements of the previous design with the Chat sidebar it launched last month, which dynamically morphs Chat from an unfoldable button to a ever-present sidebar to the right of birthdays, Events, and ads when a user’s screen has enough space. This “Ticker” feed design also mimics the new “Games Ticker” which appears while users are playing games and displays stories about game usage by friends.

A screenshot from user Robert Dickbert shows the real-time feed taking up the top half of the Chat sidebar, leaving less room for the online statuses of friends and in some cases forcing users to scroll down the sidebar to see their whole buddy list. In the tests, users didn’t have a Most Recent feed, only a “Highlights” or “Stories From The Last 5 Day” feed similar to Top News. This would make it difficult to quickly consume a large volume of rich media real-time updates.

Top News, Most Recent, and Ticker?

I believe a version of the home page that offered the Ticker and Top News but also provided the Most Recent feed would be optimal — basically how it is now, plus the Ticker. It would preserve all the old functionality and make a real-time activity feed visible to all users as the currently tested design does, but also let power users read the Most Recent feed’s full, rich-media versions of news feed stories without having to expand each from the sidebar individually. This design wouldn’t reduce the clutter of the home page, but a two-tab central feed with a real-time second feed could give gamers, casual users, and power users what they want.

Friend Quizzes, Korea.com, Photos, Phrases and Comics on This Week’s Top 20 Emerging Facebook Apps by MAU

Korea.com’s embedded website app topped our list of emerging applications by monthly active users this week. Then a French app that purports to tell you who’s looking at your profile followed. The rest of the list was split between Page tab apps, photo apps, friend quizzes with some video, comics and a Phrases app mixed in. The apps on our list grew from between 151,900 and 406,00 MAU, based on AppData, our data tracking service covering traffic growth for apps on Facebook. We define “emerging” applications as those that ended with between 100,000 and 1 million MAU in the past week.

Korea.com grew by about 406,000 MAU this week. Then the French Qui regarde le plus votre profil ? grew by 321,700 MAU.

Friend quizzes were big this week as emerging apps. Freequizz.es grew by 275,200 MAU and is a Connect app that asks you questions about your friends, then asks you invite them to the app when you answer. Warheiitsspiiel is a german friend quiz app that publishes answers to your Wall or other places and the Spanish version, Te Atrevez A Kontesta..!, grew by 225,700 MAU. Together is an app that grew by 153,600 MAU and allows users to match up their friends on Facebook, publishing to their Walls. Finally, Top Ten Friends with 194,500 MAU grew mostly in India and the Philipines and generates a list of top friends, publishing a photo that tags your friends.

Photo apps included Photos + with 229,100 MAU and How Happy are You Today which publishes a percentage of happiness to your news feed and grew mostly in India by 229,000 MAU. Friends Photos & Albums is an interesting app that places your friends’ Facebook photos into a new interface where you can view, Like or send them; the app grew by 228,700 MAU.

A few Page tab apps, Turkish Hoş Geldiniz by 275,600 MAU and Static HTML… [Fifth Tab] by 216,700 MAU. Another Turkish app, VidyoMax, grew by 154,000 MAU and is a very complex app displaying YouTube videos to be viewed, shared or commented upon.  Phrases Box [daily], which grew by 152,100 MAU, offers apps and phrases to users and finally Comic Mashup is an interesting app that grew by 151,900 MAU and creates a “comic” based on feed stories, comments and photos in your profile.
