Facebook Lets You Mark Friend Requests with “Not Now,” then Decide on Them Later
![image[3]](http://www.insidefacebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/image3.png)
Facebook is adding a new option to how people friend each other, trying to limit unwanted social behavior.
Now, when someone adds you as a friend, you can mark “Not Now,” thereby relegating their request to a separate menu called “Hidden Requests.” You can then confirm the person later in this menu, if you want, and in the meantime they’ll just see that they’re “awaiting friend confirmation” from you in the interface. Just as when you choose to not accept a friend request, they will not be notified when you give them this new designation.

Facebook says it is also trying to refine how it prohibits overly aggressive friending through the feature. If you hide then delete a request, you’ll have the option to mark that you don’t know the person. This will block that person from trying to friend you in the future.

That’s an interesting feature, but why create another folder on my page? If I am not sure whether to add the person, I just leave her invitation hanging for a while and then decide. Wouldn’t it be easier just to introduce “I don’t know the person” button on the confirm/ignore friends box? Also, what if I didn’t know the person and blocked her and then got acquainted – will we be never able to make friends with them?

What is called “aggressive friending” will still be happening due to the behavioral factor – many people find it impolite to decline requests to become friends. They accept all the requests just to block the unwanted “friends” later on by other available means.

I don’t like this new feature. I prefer, “ignore” or “confirm”. Now those who have “awaiting friend confirmations” listed on their profile will NEVER go answered because of this so-called hidden folder. Out of sight, out of mind, I say. Give me back my “ignore” button!

Not only did Fb not notify us, but I found “Hidden Requests” in my husbands site. ( I set this site up for him & manage it as this is not a site for mildly computer literate people!)Thought some gal was trying to send a married man a hidden request or that he had done it to hide from me. Turns out, he hit ignore & thought she was gone…a done deal.
Aside from the fact we could have ended up in divorce court, when you access your account via a smart phone, you are unable to see this “hidden feature”. Then you have to access full site to confirm or delete this potential “hidden friend”. What a pain. I’m starting to really miss MySpace!!

It’s in the human nature to gravitate towards saying ‘yes’ to a request than to decline it in cold blood. There is always a chance of hurt feelings or even more – retaliation. “Not now” button is a good way out of the dilemma, besides it fits with the procrastinating nature that most of us can admit to.
