Facebook Tests Notification Unsubscribe Button For Feed Posts
Facebook is now testing a notification unsubscribe button on news feed posts a user has liked or commented on. It allows users to opt out of notifications for subsequent activity on that post. While users can already go to Account Settings->Notifications to set email and mobile notification preferences, this is the first option that lets users choose what triggers notifications to appear in the globe icon in Facebook’s top navigation bar.

Facebook’s default is for every additional like or comment on a post to trigger a notification. This helps generate more conversation, but it can become obnoxious in some cases, such as when a subsequent exciting, controversial, or off-topic comment or two leads to an avalanche of additional ones. Users have until now had to endure these unwanted notifications or retract their like or comment.
Currently, those seeing this test now have an “Unsubscribe” button next to the timestamp on any post they’ve liked or commented on, reminiscent of FriendFeed’s hide button on posts. The option won’t appear if they haven’t participated.
Facebook has yet to introduce noise-reducing feature to other types of content, such as photos in an album, or a subscribe-without-comment button. The company has tried to keep controls simple — many people haven’t used other noise-filtering tools like the now-removed sliders for types of news feed content, or friends lists. But given how talkative some friends can be, there might be a good portion of the user base who would appreciate more options here.
Overall, notifications are key to getting users to frequently return to Facebook. The site recently enabled browser tab alerts for notifications, messages, and friend requests to increase engagement of users with open but not necessarily visible Facebook tabs, for example, even as it has scaled back third-party notifications and other communication channels in recent months. The company is trying to find the balance between an engaging site and one that is too noisy.

They better do something so that we can get notifications when people comment on our pages’ posts, notes, pictures and discussions.

How can I get in on this “test” if I wasn’t notified to be part of it?

I had been using the unsubscribe button when it showed up unnanounced on my FB page. I loved it but now it is gone. How do I get it back?????
October 6th, 2010 at 7:48 am
they removed the unsubscribe feature today.. :( i guess it dropped their users time on site which most likely reduces their advertising conversion.

And now it’s already gone…grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I WANT THE UNSUBSCRIBE BUTTON BACK…
October 6th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
I miss my unsubscribe button so much! I still logged in to Facebook just the same, the only difference it made is that I deleted less emails. Where’s my thumbs down button? :(

Nuts. I liked the Unsubscribe button. I didn’t mind seeing others’ comments to posts but it becomes ridiculous when the comments start numbering in the dozens. Unsubscribing was a sensible option.
So nice going FB. My ‘users’ time’ will be even less now because I won’t be ‘liking’ things as much. Thanks for randomly selecting me though!

I Liked The Unsubscribe Button. Now I Won’t Be Liking Anything Because Of Annoying Conversations That Carry On Endlessly . Nice

I miss the unsubscribe button. Bring it back please.

I want the unsubscribe button back!!
I have friends who are musicians and have fans on their friends list, so when my friends post something, I can’t even respond to it because if I do I end up getting 500 notification messages because their stupid fans are responding too!
Unsubscribing didn’t stop me from visiting facebook – it actually made me visit it and contribute to the ‘social network’ more than I did before because I knew with the unsubscribe feature, I could connect to my friends without having to deal with a million notification messages and emails.

I want it back… I find myself deleting comments that I’ve made again because I lost my button. I love to comment on my friend’s baby updates, but so does everyone else…
BOOOOOO
October 14th, 2010 at 9:11 am
I agree. I participated MORE on FB with the unsubscribe button than without. Please bring it back!!
October 14th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
I had it and loved it. I agree with other users: I found that it allowed me to comment on my friend’s pictures, status updates, etc and not have to worry about getting so many notifications on my iPhone (i.e “oh your baby is adorable” or “happy birthday”). Bring it back!! It was a great feature that allowed users to network MORE.

I had the unsubscribe and I LOVED it!!! PLEASE Facebook, bring it back! Without the subscribe button, I definitely comment less on people’s posts because I don’t always want to be notified when 50 people after me make a comment!
