Facebook Buys Social Travel Startup Nextstop

Nextstop, a two year-old startup that allowed users to share activities and other info for fellow travelers, has been acquired by Facebook, it announced today. The company was founded by Carl Sjogreen and Adrian Graham formerly of Google — specifically Google Groups, Calendar and Picasa — and the Nextstop team is set to join Facebook.

In a post on the Nexstop web site the company noted it would be shutting down as of September 1 of this year, but will allow current years to export their information to other services. During the two years the company has been active, more than 100,000 recommendations were made for places around the world, according to the blog. It’s possible that the team and the service might become part of Facebook’s forthcoming location service (details of which are still not confirmed).

The company said the decision to move to Facebook was difficult, but, ultimately the company’s mission to help make travel experiences better was best accomplished on Facebook. Nextstop also noted that users’ data will not be shared with Facebook.

Facebook’s been busy with acquisitions this year, buying contact importer Octazen in February, photo app maker Divvyshot in April, and most recently, private conversations site Sharegrove in May.
