New Facebook Photo Uploader Coming Soon

Facebook’s photo uploader hasn’t had a makeover in years, but the new version — the one that’s been in testing since last fall — is going to be slowly introduced to users in the next few weeks, the company says. People who upload a lot of photos to Facebook (you know who you are) are going to appreciate it.

This is an especially big deal because Facebook is the largest photo-sharing site in the world, with more than 2.5 billion photos uploaded every month.

The company has rebuilt the uploader to run as a browser plugin, which should mitigate the bugs and other problems that users have sometimes encountered with it to date. To get started, users will need to install the plugin in their browser, a process the company says should only take a couple minutes max.

The top half of the photo uploader interface shows folders in your desktop, the lower half shows you photos to upload. Once you’ve begun uploading, you can navigate from the page, or Facebook, and when the process is done you’ll get a notification saying so.

I noticed this new uploader the last time I added photos to my account (I guess I was selected as an early user) and must say, it’s a huge improvement over the old way of uploading photos. The file tree is helpful for finding the right photos, the image preview works well and works quickly, and it felt very stable, which may be due to it being a plugin.

Overall, I’m glad Facebook is taking steps to make media importing easier, since media is a large part of what makes Facebook unique when compared to sites like Twitter.

Looks like Facebook is not correctly detecting some browser versions.

Eg. when adding pictures using Firefox 3.6, FB keeps saying:

Want a better photo uploading experience?

You are using a simplified version of the Facebook photo uploader. A better experience is available, but not for your browser. You can use Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer to enjoy the full version.
