Facebook Roundup: Places in Denmark, SEC, Lawsuits, Privacy and Media

Facebook To Launch Places in Denmark - A database of Places has been set up in Denmark, which may signal that Facebook is ready to debut its location service in the country. In September we predicted Denmark could be one of the next countries to gain access to Places due to its high iPhone market penetration. The country also has a high penetration of Android phones which gained Places in the official Facebook app in November.

Share Rule Change and Facebook IPO – The Securities and Exchange Commission has become interested in the trading of Facebook shares. Currently the shares put the value of the company at $42.37 billion, shares belong to early-stage venture capital investors and former employees.

Paul Allen Sues Facebook, Again – As we previously covered, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen tried to sue Facebook and other tech companies for patent infringement. The case was rejected earlier this month in federal court but Allen has amended the suit.

Old Facebook Apps Carry More Privacy Risk - Turns out that older Facebook applications allow companies fuller access to the data of a users’ friends. For example, the Send Cupcakes app allows access to friends’ photos and videos, whereas newer apps may not.

New Facebook Stats - In a recent blog post Facebook disclosed some interesting statistics. For example, the average media organization saw an increase of more than 100% in referral traffic. SportingNews.com counts Facebook as its top referrer with content re-sharing up by 65% and an increase of 18% in commenting. The Washington Post saw more than a 280% increase in referral traffic by implementing the social plugins and Cracked.com saw growth of 450% from Facebook users.

20. New Year Greetings to all my Friends 304,142 +169,127 +219%

Apps like My Best Friends of 2010 aren’t unique; for the most part they copy existing, larger titles. The other holiday apps on the list are all greeting apps: ·٠•●★●·Blessed New Year To My Friends·●★●•, Christmas Card, Happy New Year♥♥Especially for You, Merry Kissmas and Happy New Year! and New Year Greetings to all my Friends.

Famous Status Update is a lot like My Best Friends in that it looks over your wall activity to come up with a top activity, but it’s not tied to the holiday. The better name for the app might be (Your) Famous Status Update.

Komşu Çiftlik is the first of the games on the list, although oddly, its developer did not classify it as a game on Facebook. It’s a Turkish-language title, and one of the first polished sims we’ve seen in that language.

Facebook Adds More Companies to List of Approved Advertising Providers

Earlier this month, Facebook introduced a list of advertising providers that it has approved for developers to use for offers, banner ads and other forms of advertising in their platform applications. The initial list was quite short, with a number of long-time providers missing — but it has been adding more.

Since we wrote about the list on Monday, Facebook has added a number of established and newer names to the list. They include:

  • APP Prizes
  • DoubleDing
  • Fox Networks
  • Httpool
  • PubMatic
  • RadiumOne
  • Rubicon Project
  • Some of the companies, like DoubleDing, have been active on the platform for a long time. Others, like News Corp.’s Fox Networks and Rubicon Project, are better known as ad networks focused on the entire web.

Facebook requires that companies first agree to a set of terms, then it approves them an adds them to the list — and it requires that developers only choose from the list, not any others.

We expect more names to begin showing here shortly. Some, like Google, are still missing.

Facebook Is Top Search Term and Most Visited Website for 2010

Experian Hitwise released statistics yesterday indicating that “Facebook” was the most frequently searched term for the second year in a row, besting YouTube, Craigslist, and MySpace. Among the top ten searched terms, four were variations of Facebook, including “Facebook login” showing that users frequently search rather than entering the site’s URL or clicking a bookmark when they want to browse the site.

The rankings of the top searched musicians closely mirror our PageData charts of the most popular Pages, showing that Like count may be an accurate measurement of public interest. Facebook also overtook Google for the first time to become the most visited website of 2010.

Social networking sites claimed 4.18% of the top 50 searches, demonstrating that the public is very interested in using and learning about ways to interact with friends online. Facebook, and variations like “Facebook.com”, made up 3.48% of U.S. searches among the top 50 terms, a 207% increase over 2009, outpacing Facebook’s monthly active user growth for the year.

The climb of the term “Facebook login” from the ninth to the second most searched term means users are interested in a quick, simple way to access their account. Facebook has been trying to help users achieve this by prompting some to add the site as their home page.

All five of the top searched musicians, including Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson, are also among the top 30 Facebook Pages and top 11 musician Pages on Facebook according to our PageData tracking service. While Like counts can be artificially increased through marketing and Like-gated promotions, the correlation in the statistics shows that Facebook Page size may be an accurate gauge of public interest for some categories.

Google led Facebook in terms of total visits across its owned web properties with 9.85% of all U.S. visits, summed from its search engine’s 7.19%, YouTube’s 2.65%, and other sites including Gmail and Google Maps. Facebook.com alone brought in 8.93% of all U.S. visits, meaning it might one day exceed Google in this category if it expanded its service offerings.

Hitwise stated that “the top 10 Websites accounted for 33 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November 2010, an increase of 12 percent versus 2009.”, showing the biggest sites in several categories are pulling share away from their smaller competitors. This consolidation could be fueled or signaled by the numerous acquisitions by web giants like Facebook and Google in 2010.

Facebook Career Posts: Intellectual Property, Advertising Counsel, Global Marketing Manager, Singapore and More

An interesting round of new posts on Facebook’s Career Page this week, right before the end of the year, especially couple of interesting intellectual property principal positions that opened up. The two positions — one based in Palo Alto, Calif. and the other in Austin, Texas —are tasked with helping Facebook build its Intellectual Property Operations team.

The Intellectual Property Principal – User Operations will lead a team managing incoming claims of intellectual property rights violations and be based in Palo Alto. This person must be an expert in intellectual property issues, especially: copyright and trademark infringement, publicity and privacy rights violations, instances of defamation, and third-party application abuse. Working with other legal teams and developing new scalable operations are other requirements, although this person must not be an attorney.

This position is paired with a job in Austin for an Intellectual Property Principal – User Operations.

A job for Product and Advertising Counsel in Palo Alto will work in Facebook’s legal department with product and advertising teams to “review existing and new products and services and advertising systems and programs.” This person needs to be an attorney.

Facebook is seeking a Global Marketing Manager – Facebook Platform to work on the expansion of platform products like Connect, social plugins, instant personalization, canvas, open graph, APIs and infrastructure. This person will be headquartered in Palo Alto, recruit and manage a product marketing team to develop competitive programs to “support successful product introductions and continued growth with high quality partner implementations that result in great user experience and partner success.”

A Global Product Marketing Manager – Canvas & Open Graph will help lead Facebook’s expansion of key platform products, like the canvas platform and open graph. It will be headquartered in Palo Alto and this person will help to develop and implement a marketing strategy to ensure growth, engagement and satisfaction.

A few other interesting jobs, an Administrative – Sales Support position opening in Singapore and a Recruiting Manager job in Austin.

Facebook Mobile Apps for Windows Phone 7 and Palm WebOS Gain Places

Places functionality is included in the most recent updates to Microsoft and Palm’s official Facebook mobile apps, allowing more Facebook users to begin sharing their location. Facebook for Windows Phone 7 Version 1.1 also includes photo tagging, and Palm’s Facebook for HP webOS Version 1.5 builds on Version 1.4 which included the ability to open multiple instances, or cards,of the app.

These updates put the Windows and HP webOS apps on par with the Blackberry app, but behind the Android app which has Groups, Chat and push notifications, and the iPhone app which also has advanced Places options and Deals. With Places now available to users of all the major Facebook mobile platforms, check-ins should become more common in the feed, reinforcing the notion that sharing one’s location is a natural part of social networking.

Facebook launched Places in August, though initially it was only available on Facebook for iPhone and touch.facebook.com. It wasn’t until November that Android and Blackberry users gained access. Facebook has said it is seeking to close the functionality gap between the iPhone and previously lagging Android apps, both of which are developed in-house. Meanwhile, the Blackberry, Windows and Palm apps which are developed by their respective platform owners are left trying to catch up, making the handsets that run them less attractive to avid Facebook users.

    Facebook for Windows

Microsoft’s Facebook for Windows Phone 7 Version 1.1 also includes performance improvements, a better graphical interface, and the ability to run while the phone’s screen is locked. The addition of Places makes the app more powerful that the Windows Phone 7′s native People and Me hubs from which users can update their status, view recent posts by friends, and change their profile picture. Before this update, there was little reason to use the specific Facebook for Windows app over the hubs.

Users can also now tag friends in photos — something currently unavailable in the Android app. Still, the app lacks push notifications, Chat, and Groups.

    Facebook for webOS

Palm’s Facebook for webOS Version 1.5 adds Places to emoticons and the ability to post status updates from the native Just Type universal search interface which were added in Version 1.4. Regarding the lack of Chat in the Facebook app, Justin Reid, one of the mobile app’s developers and the outspoken community manager for its Facebook Page, says that “Facebook Chat will be supported by the Messaging app in a forthcoming update to HP webOS 2.0. No need to keep chiming in about that – we’re already on the case.” This software update is due by the end of the year, though it seems awkward that users will have to leave the Facebook app in order to Chat with their Facebook friends.

One noticeable advantage of Microsoft’s app over Palm’s is that if users choose to pull info about their Facebook friends into their Windows Phone address book, they can do so for only the friends for which they already have other contact info. This keeps the address book tidy. The webOS version of this data sync pulls the info of all of your friends, cluttering the address book with distant acquaintances.

Users of these two platforms should be excited about the addition of Places. The other deficiencies are more private, and the missing features can be used from the Facebook web interface. But now when friends talk about the more social, public, mobile-only Places feature, Palm and Windows users won’t have to feel left out or disappointed in their app anymore.

Mobile Apps Add Users on This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Apps by DAU

Several mobile apps have added significant numbers of users on this week’s AppData list of fastest-growing apps by daily active users, perhaps signaling that new smartphones and tablets were a popular Christmas gift this year. There are four total starting with HTC Sense:

    Top Gainers This Week
    Name DAU Gain Gain,%
    1. Yahoo! 4,663,256 +2,489,067 +114%
    2. Prosperous New Year To All My Friends :) 1,454,836 +678,660 +87%
    3. Windows Live Messenger 11,371,674 +283,842 +3%
    4. CityVille 13,897,851 +223,175 +2%
    5. HTC Sense 3,667,569 +206,437 +6%
    6. FarmVille 中文版 222,649 +184,595 +485%
    7. Tavla 235,140 +177,567 +308%
    8. Tarjetitas 400,365 +158,337 +65%
    9. Friendly for iPad 417,061 +150,247 +56%
    10. Samsung Mobile 1,454,466 +140,801 +11%
    11. My Top Friends (new) 150,777 +122,206 +428%

    16. iPhoto Uploader 207,689 +58,098 +39%
    17. ☻ ♥ My BesT WisheS to YoU ♥☻ 117,369 +49,371 +73%

    20. xo Hearts xo 89,175 +44,175 +98%

You’d see more mobile apps on the list, but there are a handful, like Facebook for iPhone and Facebook for Blackberry, that we’ve removed from our leaderboards to prevent them from obscuring apps that live on the platform. Those two respectively added about 1.5 million and 400,000 new DAU. HTC Sense, Samsung Mobile, Ovi by Nokia and Nokia are all smaller mobile apps that are gaining, while Friendly for iPad is an alternative iPad social networking app.

Yahoo! and Windows Live Messenger are two Connect apps that we’ve seen many times before, so we’ll pass over them. And Prosperous New Year To All My Friends is one of the short-lived season’s greetings apps that will probably be gone in a week.

CityVille has been the big story for a few weeks, but you’ll note that it’s only number four this week. Although the app is still making huge gains of monthly active users, its DAU is dropping as the stickiness, or percentage of monthly users who come back daily, falls to normal levels.

Facebook’s Year in Acquisitions: Ten and Counting

Facebook stepped up acquisitions by tenfold this year, after its first two yielded talent that went on to create the company’s iPhone app and a much more elegant way for third-party developers to interact with the platform.

After turning free cash-flow positive in September of last year, Facebook used its extra spending power to buy 10 companies. They were mostly talent acquisitions — or purchases for engineering talent instead of product or technology — although Facebook did acquire intellectual property in some cases. (If you want to understand how Facebook’s M&A works, Vaughn Smith, the company’s head of corporate development, explained it in this interview from last month.)

Smith told us the company would do “doublish” the number of acquisitions next year, while Mike Brown, who is on his team, said Facebook would do about 15 deals in 2011.

With this year’s batch, a couple trends stood out to us:

East Coast talent: Two of the companies Facebook bought during the last six months hail from New York City. Sam Lessin, a longtime friend of Mark Zuckerberg, left behind his work building private-sharing tools at Drop.io to head to the West Coast. Justin Shaffer, who spent a year building location-based app Hot Potato, also left the East Coast to lead Groups and then Places.

Not all talent acquisitions are created equal: Some of the acquisitions were essentially hires of single founders, product managers or engineers that weren’t seeing widespread traction for their startups. Others were decorated veterans that would have been sought after by multiple companies; the team from Chai Labs helped build and scale Google’s AdSense, for example. The original FriendFeed team had the co-creator of Google Maps and current Facebook CTO Bret Taylor. Pricing for these deals varies considerably and Smith told us that terms are based on how much Facebook thinks the team can impact the company. Nor did Facebook win every acquisition; they lost at least one to Google, which made an offer an order of magnitude higher.

    So where are they now?

Octazen Solutions (February): Facebook bought this tiny team in Malaysia known for their expertise in contact importing. Even it sounds boring, contact importing has actually played a very important part in Facebook’s growth over the last five years. Contact importers are software tools that allow you to provide login credentials for an email service like Gmail or Hotmail, so you can automatically import names and email addresses of people you’ve communicated with in the past. Populating Facebook with enough friends so that a new user’s “Day One” experience is smooth is critical to ensuring they stay active on the site.
Where are they now? Octazen’s CEO Kenneth Foo is still working on growth and the team they’ve built still seems to be working mostly from Malaysia. The company introduced an addictive “Find Friends Browser” last month that has infinite scrolling and lets you look for friends based on location, workplace or education history.

Divvyshot (April): The Y Combinator-backed company was focused on making group photo sharing easier. But it only had around 40,000 users, so the acquisition was an opportunity for the team to play with and manage the world’s largest photo-sharing product.
Where are they now? Sam Odio is the product manager for Facebook photos and has helped push out face detection, high resolution photos and a better photo viewer with fellow Divvyshot engineer Paul Carduner and other Facebook talent.

Sharegrove (May): This was essentially a one-man hire of Adam Wolff, who co-founded this seed-funded startup for private conversations.
Where are they now? Wolff is now a software engineer at Facebook.

Nextstop (July): Facebook brought on two seasoned former Google product managers with this purchase. Nextstop was a travel recommendations startup led by Carl Sjogreen, who was the founding product manager for Google Calendar, and Adrian Graham, who oversaw Picasa.
Where are they now? Carl Sjogreen has helped fill Facebook chief technology officer Bret Taylor’s shoes by leading the platform product team. Graham has been working on News Feed and Questions.

Chai Labs (August): Facebook never formally confirmed this acquisition, but it’s certainly the most intriguing one of this year. Gokul Rajaram, considered a “godfather” for Google AdSense, is now a product director for ads at Facebook. He is said to be joining another Google veteran, Rohit Dhawan, who co-led the DoubleClick acquisition and integration and oversaw the search giant’s display advertising network, on the team.
Where are they now? As product director for advertising, Rajaram still leads a technical team that is still relatively small right now and is dealing with an overwhelming amount of in-bound interest. But stay tuned.

Hot Potato (August): Facebook picked up Justin Shaffer from this location-based service, which helped people share moments around events and places. Shaffer had close ties to longtime Facebook employees David Morin and Aaron Sittig, who were beta testers for Hot Potato.
Where are they now? Justin Shaffer took the lead on building and launching Groups this fall, and then shifted to run Places.

Drop.io (October): Sam Lessin, a longtime friend of Zuckerberg from their Harvard days, built a private sharing product Drop.io and raised just under $5 million from investors including RRE Ventures and DFJ Gotham Ventures.
Where are they now? Sam Lessin is out on the West Coast. It’s not clear which team he’s joined yet.

Zenbe (partial acquisition, November): Facebook picked up three employees from this for its newly-launched Messages product. Zenbe had been working on a next-generation communication platform called Shareflow, which was a collaborative sharing service for small teams.
Where are they now? On the Messages team, where they have joined FriendFeed alum Dan Hsiao, who is product manager.

Walletin (November): Former Linden Labs chief technology officer Cory Ondrejka and Bruce Rogers sold their stealth startup and its associated technology to Facebook.
Where are they now? It’s too early to tell. The pair only came on-board at the end of November.

Mystery acquisition(s): At the time we interviewed Smith last month, there was at least one more unannounced acquisition.

Did you miss some of these events when they happened?
