This was an excellent analysis Justin. Really good read and a perfect counter to the 'treading water' theory that so strongly plagues virtual goods/gaming.

I first got a handle on this by comparing it to high fashion. People can easily and comfortably dress themselves with $20 jeans, a $10 t-shirt, etc., but they choose to spend significantly more for it. A $250 D&G handbag is tangibly better than a $10 bag, but not $240 better... much of the difference in cost could be considered 'money for nothing'. But, like virtual goods, there is an emotional connection that people buy into.
