StalkerCheck, I Mean FanCheck: Explosive New App Gains 5 Million Users in One Day

facebook top fanA clever new app on Facebook, called FanCheck, gained five million users on Sunday, according its creator, a company called Smile.

Why the growth? The app lets you see which of your friends spend the most time posting and commenting on your profile wall, and also lets you see who spends the most time posting on your friends’ walls. It’s a new way to monitor friendships, shall we say. The app used to be called “StalkerCheck,” the company says, until Facebook made Smile find a less menacing term.

As of today, the app has 15.1 million monthly active users. The way it works is that you give the app permission to access you and your friends’ data through Facebook’s Platform APIs, then it calculates who has spent the most time interacting with you. The result is a thumbnailed, ranked list of your friends. You can also see the same rankings for anyone you’re friends with.

I imagine this app has been making and breaking some relationships lately. Personally, I learned that my younger sister is my number one “fan!”

FanCheck accesses user data through Facebook’s Stream API, which lets apps access the “stream” of activity on users’ profiles. The official description on the app:

This application ranks your friends based on how often they interact with your Facebook wall. Interactions counted include wall posts, comments, likes, gifts and other public items posted to your wall. We do NOT count page views or private messages.

And, an important note. The app appears to be growing through a clever use of photo tagging. At the bottom of your top fans list, there’s a button that says “click here to share and tag this as a Facebook photo.” This means the app turns the rankings into a single photo, then tags it with all of your friends names so it appears on their profile walls. We’ve seen a few other apps using the same viral mechanism in the last several days.

I have some serious reservations with this application…. several of my friends and myself saw a whole set of things happening on our Facebook homepage after having installed this new miracle app like displaying old messages instead of new messages….. i am not claiming anything but am just warning you to keep a serious eye out if you do install this app. I have erased it from my list already and problems have gone with it!

I find the auto-tagging so annoying and brings unnecessary notifications in my news stream after a lot of my friends installed this app and those that are similar to it. I don’t see any uniqueness or fun in them so I went on a witch hunt to find other similar apps and then started blocking them.

    So if you find it annoying too, here is a list of apps to visit and block;

    All My Friends http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=142389191973

    Frineds Characters http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=151655842703

If you noticed, the last one is even spelled “Frineds”, it’s for real! How can an app like that be trusted?!

It’s so annoying, and I’d blocked it as well as any similar app when I saw one. It’s more annoying than quiz apps.

Mashable claims that this type of app is a hoax.

“that allegedly lets you see who been visiting your Facebook profile – which cannot work due to Facebook’s policies, and all applications claiming to do so are scams.”

  9. Eric Eldon says:

Al, the app appears to be using Facebook’s stream API to measure information like who is posting on your wall. It doesn’t claim to be measuring visitor impressions on your page.

  10. Sidra says:

The app says it only measures activities on another person’s wall, rather than page views; however I have been listing as #10 on a girl’s Fan Check and i have never even wrote or messaged anything to her. I am not in any photos with her either and we share no common friends. And she has more than 200 friends so it’s surprising I got ranked #10. So perhaps it does measure page views…otherwise what else could account for my rating?

Just another way of having some sicko or sickos look into your personal lives & habits. Why should any of you knuclkeheads who use this device be questioning it’s ramifications, after all aren’t you the same wackos who have intimate cell phone conversations in public & abhor anyone who asks you to tone it down. I mean like com’on, arent you the same dim-wits who opposed Obama speaking to school children because you feared a lack of control but yet let your little snot brats attend school wearing laptops, Pdf’s & cell phones & not knowing who or what they are viewing & talking to.
