Facebook Working on New Twitter Integration?

While it’s too early to tell exactly what this means, Facebook engineer Blake Ross today posted a “test” tweet from a Twitter application called “Penguin FB” that resides on Facebook development servers. One interesting possibility: Facebook is working on a new, more native Twitter integration that would let users publish updates to Twitter automatically from Facebook.
If that is indeed the case, it would be an interesting move by Facebook. Allowing users to more easily link their Facebook updates with other services like Twitter could potentially make Facebook one of the largest Twitter applications. If only a few million Facebook users were to publish their status updates to Twitter, Facebook could become the largest source of tweets – an interesting inversion of the way Twitter is used as a Facebook application by many users today.

Of course, all of this is still speculation. When contacted, Facebook said it doesn’t have any comment on the “Penguin FB” project. (Update: Ross has since deleted the tweet.)
Nevertheless, the idea correlates with Facebook’s strategy in recent months to make status updates and streams more open and public. Will Facebook make it easy for users to automatically syndicate their public posts to any number of other services? It could very well make a lot of sense, and Twitter would be one of the best places to start.

The better observation here is that it was posted by Blake Ross, the co-founder/developer of FireFox who began working at FaceBook after his newer startup Parakey was acquired. I don’t think he would be “Working on the @facebook gamechanger with @davemorin” with a regular FB app.

I still think Selective Twitter is the best application for updating Facebook from Twitter, but updating Twitter from Facebook seems problematic. Different audiences, for starters, and why would you cut your word count down into 140 characters when you could just do that on the browser interface for Twitter?
Just some thoughts on the subject. Facebook seems to be doing everything it can to overrun Twitter, but it’s sort of pointless.

Thanks for the update. One of the reasons I like FB is that I can read/write in a normal way. Tweets have begun to look like text messages. While just about all my friends who use twitter also use FB, the reverse is not true.

[...] On Wednesday we found out (through a post by Mark Zuckerberg) that Facebook hit a quarter billion users, putting it past Indonesia as the world’s fourth populous “country.” One person who was certainly not surprised by the news was David Kirkpatrick. Although he’s currently residing in the hills of the Berkshires, there’s probably no person further inside Facebook right now than Kirkpatrick. Other than, maybe, Justin Smith of Inside Facebook. [...] A Facebook engineer has been spotted tweeting from an application called Penguin FB, as you can see in the picture, and it doesn’t take a genius to work out that the FB probably is probably short for Facebook. So, putting two and two together combined with denials from Facebook and the removal of the tweet by engineer Ross Blake, there’s a very good chance that this was a test of a Twitter application on Facebook which allows users to tweet directly from the world’s biggest social network. The move would be in line with Facebook’s drive to get in on the act in some way, whether that be by aping Twitter or, in this case, by trying to hold on to a lot of the traffic through the API. Doubtless, we’ll hear more about it soon. (via Facebook Insider) [...]

Given the 140 character limit on Twitter, I can envision millions of Facebook updates consisting of the start of the comment, cut off promptly at 120 chars with a link to FB for the rest…
I like using FB with Twitter, but Twitter is where most of my output originates – usually I’ll pick up the comments in Facebook and continue conversations that way with non-Twitter-using friends. I don’t know that it would work as well the other way round….

I would be surprised if Facebook published it’s content into twitter, seems like a big favor to a company it seems intent on competing with.
I could see them testing it’s affect on traffic though, maybe they are hoping to use twitter to drive traffic back to fb with links to the status update.
