Period for Users to Comment on Facebook’s New Policies Ends Saturday

Facebook users interested in giving their input on Facebook’s new governing documents have until this Saturday night to do so.

It was one month ago today that Facebook announced its new approach to the development of the site’s policies and terms of service. After users protested Facebook’s most recent changes to its terms of service changes, Facebook reverted the changes, and shortly thereafter announced the new governing documents, called the Principles of the Facebook Service and the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, that effectively supercede all previous Terms of Service for users, developers, and advertisers. At the same time, Facebook instituted a new process of “notice and comment” on changes to the Facebook terms, with user voting in controversial cases.

Drafts of the two documents are available for input in two Facebook Groups: Facebook Town Hall: Facebook Proposed Principles and Facebook Town Hall: Proposed Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. So far, each group has about 10,000 members (very small given the earlier concerns), but those users are actively discussing their concerns with the documents in the two groups.

One privacy group, the Center for Digital Democracy, recently published their comments sent to Facebook expressing concern that the latest version of Facebook’s terms don’t do enough to protect users. “In all of the Principles, the wording allows enough legal wiggle room for Facebook to ignore them completely,” the CDD says.

The comment period for users on these documents ends this Saturday night.

  1. Facebook Hires New Director of Public Policy from the ACLU says:

[...] The ACLU is well known for its vigorous advocacy of internet privacy issues. Recently, Facebook reverted changes to its terms of service after complaints from some user and privacy advocates, and soon thereafter instituted new governing documents and processes including a user comment period and, in some cases, user voting on proposed changes to the site’s terms. (The comment period for the new documents ends tomorrow.) [...]
