Facebook to Launch Redesigned Home Page – News Feed Going “Live” Next Wednesday (Updated with Screenshots)
Today, Facebook announced that the News Feed, which has long been the most powerful way for users to discover updates from their friend on the site, is going “Live.” In addition, users will be able to filter the changes, most prominently according to friend lists.
The new home page consists of 4 primary elements: the Stream, Publisher, Filters, and Highlights.
Stream - The stream looks a lot like the current News Feed, with 2 important changes:
- It will be updated in real time.
- Feed items will be restructured more around the first person voice.
Filters - The home page will prominently feature “friend list” filters. This gives friend lists much more prominence in the Facebook experience than they have before, and makes it easy for users to filter their News Feed by friend list.
Highlights - On the right side of the page, Facebook will post “highlights” it selects. These updates will be “top” feed stories like those Facebook previously chose to show in the old News Feed, “based on what your friends have interacted with.”
Publisher - The “publisher,” or place where users can post information, remains at the top. Buttons allowing users to easily post other types of content will remain as well.
Notably, the application bookmarks are no longer in the same place on the right side of the page, but application News Feed filters are now on the left side of the page, under the friend list filters. The applications menu still exists in the menu bar on the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the update, Justin. I’m looking forward to this, and to retraining all of my clients on how this works.
Not looking forward to the resurgence of “I h8 the new Facebook” groups.

It’ll be interesting to see if application stories get any more prominence in the new feed structure. They appear to have been marginalised since the profile redesign, but possibly a live feed will mean a higher proportion of stories overall will make it through.

Well, I have the new homepage now, but… it’s NOT being updated in real time… I am a bit disappointed because I liked so much the Live Feed of the previous homepage… I hope they’ll set an opinion for this later…

Unlike the previous home page, which would refresh itself every 15 minutes or so, the updated home page is *not* a “live” feed… you only get new stuff if you refresh the page manually and a lot of the types of things we were getting on the news feed before are no longer included — when somebody adds a friend or comments on another person’s photo, etc.
The news feed is now just a big status dump laced with irritating updates about people sending peeps and hatching eggs and finding scavenger items… Filtering by friend list is nice, but that was possible in the previous version, along with the ability to fine tune — selecting more or less about a person or type of activity — now it is all or nothing with a particular friend, either see every little mundane thing they are doing or completely hide them from your feed. Not to mention the fonts are sized for an 80-year old and all the photos with rounded corners are annoyingly large and abundant… it is cluttered and disorganized and they have taken away the hierarchy of items based on font size, weight, format — everything just looks the same now.
On the profile page things are no longer in chronological order, rather are loosely grouped by type of activity and the complete removal of time stamps makes it impossible to follow things in the order they occurred, not to mention it looks really stupid when you comment on something that is like 6 items further *up* on your profile page.
As far as I can see, there is no added functionality, rather less functionality, less flexibility and a really bad design. Definitely not a change for the better!

Hi. I would like to suggest if you can create an album for pictures in the group page. Presently, all pictures contributed by different persons got mixed or scrambled and it has no caption. I hope you will make the necessary changes. Thank you.
