Facebook Surpasses 175 Million Users, Continuing to Grow by 600k Users/Day
February 14th, 2009

Facebook has hit the 175,000,000 active user mark, just 5 weeks after it hit 150 million users in January. At this rate, Facebook has been growing by well over 600,000 users per day over the last several weeks, continuing the company’s torrid growth pace.
If Facebook were a country, it would now be the 6th most populous in the world.

Where is all the growth coming from? As we’ve been tracking closely, Facebook has been growing very rapidly amongst women and people over 30 in the US, and it has been absolutely exploding internationally (January highlights).
- 45% of Facebook’s US audience is now 26 years old or older.
- The fastest growing segment in the US: Women over 55, up 175.3% in the last 120 days. Facebook growing faster with women than men in almost every age group.
- The number of people on Facebook grew by over 10% monthly in 52 countries in January. It grew by over 20% monthly in January in 13 countries.
- Facebook’s monthly growth accelerated by at least 25% in 30 countries in January vs. December 2008.
Clearly, Facebook’s population is changing. It’s becoming much more diverse demographically, and it’s becoming a LOT bigger. Marketers and developers still evaluating whether to participate in the Facebook ecosystem have millions more reasons to get involved literally every week. Inside Facebook is here to help.

Great. Now what I would expect is that with growing user base their revenue base should also grow. It’s long been overdue!

I personally know ‘friends’ who have had upwards of a dozen fake profiles they use to play games with. Is it any wonder Facebook Ads deliver poor click through and even poor RoI!

Facebook is definitely on a role! In The Netherlands there is a local community called Hyves and have about 7 MLN users equally to 45% of Dutch inhabitants.
While I had already switched from Hyves to Facebook in 2007, in the past 3 months I saw a whole network of young asians (20-30+) take the switch. I even received an e-mail from a friend in Hyves telling all his hyves friends that he would leave Hyves as he didn’t want to spend time updating 2 social networks separately.
Personally I have found ways to integrate my Wordpress blog into both Facebook and Hyves, even in Linkedin. And my Twitter is updating the ‘what are you doing now’ status in Hyves and Facebook.
But truly – as I’m 30 years old – I’m a Facebook fan generating probably more than 30 pageviews a day in facebook.
Especially the encounter with MafiaWars made me addicted to Facebook and I’ve been able to take at least 10 others addicted to it, including 2 new members. So this means that I at least gave facebook 200 pageviews more per day. What if 1 MLN others would do this for Facebook every month?
And professionally I’ve come to the conclusion that all of the people out there who are thinking about creating a new community for whatever group, they should look at these articles:
- http://seekingalpha.com/article/35533-social-networking-sites-facebook-grows-myspace-slows
- http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/leading-social-networking-sites-still-growing/
I’ve written a blog about how to deserve your own community in 7 steps on my own blog. I’m always looking for more visitors on my blog, so please have a look
