They need to experiment far more with "scarcity". Bring in some brands like "The Hundreds" or Kanye. Release quantities that really do sell out. Think Woot. Limited editions. One-of-a-kinds. Reward early adopters. Hot-or-not sold virtual flowers that wilted over time.

I think it is a nice article and FB has definitely a lot of opportunity to shine in this arena or kill the competition (depending on what side you stand).

An interesting opportunity which is not mentioned above is to let other businesses on the opportunity to make money. Here is one app that does it well: http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=60451771284

It lets anybody (organizations or individuals) to create their gifts and make money when users send or get them. I think it is genius idea.

But again, i am biased as i am part of the team that built it.

a lot of the ideas here are awful. it would be like gifts are spamming facebook. you go to a friends profile and see the 'give a gift' box at the top instead of being able to leave a wall post, then the feed would show all gifts given before you see the newest feed stories. plus the news feed would have 'give a gift' links all over it. this would annoy a lot of people and i think would stop some people using facebook. they need to be careful not to go overkill with promoting gifts.

but doing thinks like letting people buy gifts with paypal, SMS etc would be of benefit to both FB and users.
