Facebook UK Traffic Spikes on Christmas Day
A new report from Hitwise UK today shows that Christmas Day was Facebook’s busiest day ever in Great Britian.
According to Hitwise, Facebook accounted for 4.65% of all Internet traffic in the UK on Christmas day – a 69% increase over its share of Internet traffic on Christmas day 2007 – making it the second most visited site in the UK on Christmas behind Google. Social networks as a whole accounted for 10% of all UK visits during Christmas week.

Christmas was also good to many application developers on Facebook. Check out our previous coverage on the growth that many apps saw during the holiday season:

This was likely due to the millions uploading their photos from Christmas Eve/Day to share with friends :)

I agree with Joe about photo uploads, but I’d add that it is likely that other web sites saw a drop during that time as people used the Internet less, but still managed to drop in to Facebook to say Merry Christmas to their distant family and friends. Stating a percentage “of all Internet traffic” is less useful when you don’t state how the sum of the traffic changed.

Bryan: Agreed that it would have been helpful to also include the sum in the report, but it is still noteworthy that YOY share jumped 70% from Christmas day last year.
Joe: Agreed, along with status updates, etc :)
