It’s been a busy year for Facebook on the iPhone:
- On July 10, the day the iPhone App Store launched, Facebook released Facebook for iPhone 1.0.
- On September 30, Facebook launched a more fully featured Facebook for iPhone 2.0 that brought Facebook’s iPhone application nearly in step with the redesigned Facebook site.
- At f8, the company also announced Facebook Connect for iPhone, which has already been put to use by many app and game developers.
Today, Apple released the top 10 most downloaded applications (free, paid, and by category) in 2008. Facebook ranked #2 amongst all free apps behind Pandora and just ahead of Tap Tap Revenge, and #1 amongst social networking applications ahead of AIM and MySpace.
While Facebook for iPhone still doesn’t take advantage of the iPhone’s location-aware capabilities, the growth in Facebook mobile usage in 2008 combined with today’s stats show just how quickly users are adopting a multi-screen Facebook experience. Congratulations to Joe Hewitt and the Facebook for iPhone team on a great start in 2008.
