Facebook for iPhone 2.0 Launches

September 30th, 2008

Facebook tonight launched version 2.0 of its Facebook for iPhone application, bringing many features that were before only available on the site to a mobile device for the first time.

With version 2.0:

  • The home page now features a full News Feed, along with access to filtered views of the News Feed, like Status Updates, Posted Items, Live Feed, and Events.
  • Full photo tagging and posting is now supported.
  • Notifications are now accessible for the first time.
  • Profiles now have tabs, like the Facebook website redesign.
  • Feed comments are accessible both here and on the News Feed.

Overall, Facebook for iPhone now looks and feels like a fully featured Facebook - it’s a remarkably well designed product.

Facebook’s Joe Hewitt, the lead developer of the iPhone application, said shortly after the release tonight, “I’ve been hearing some bug reports in 2.0, so I will probably wind up doing a 2.1 release in the short term to address many of these problems. Please tell me if you find anything wrong (in the comments here, or you can message me), and I will try to fix it.”

Facebook for iPhone can be downloaded by heading to the App Store on your iPhone.

Please implement a language option into the Belgian version of the app. Currently only French is supported, yet Dutch (Nederlands) is spoken by the majority of Belgians. Politically, this is very painful at the moment…

Is location awareness added in this release? It would be cool to add your location and a picture to a status update.

version 2.0 seems to think the time is at least 6 hours forward from current. E.g status updates posted an hour ago sho as 7 hours ago on iPhone, also Ver 2.0 thought it was Oct 1st at approx 18:00 on 30th Sept.

This looks A LOT better the Facebook for Blackberry. That one is a joke.

  13. Bijan Says:

I can’t seem to login at all using the app! I enter my email and password and it just gets stuck on “logging in”. It doesn’t crash per say, it just doesn’t go anywhere! Help!

  14. Shalmanese Says:

A major annoyance with the new version is that it’s impossible to check events.

  15. gerald Says:

    Hi Joe
Very excited to try the app, but I’m have problems logging in. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling three times, restarting in between, with no change. If I intentionally type the wrong password it tells me right away, otherwise it just says logging in, but never progresses. What am I doing wrong?

  16. Prince Says:

Well, is this application available on the entire internet other than apple store?
Apple store sucks as it is asking for me to be in a country where apple store works…unfortunately my country is not listed on that list and hence I can not download anything from that store :(
    HELLLLLP MEEE PULEEJ :((

  17. Wayne Says:

    1) What is up with the time/date on 2.0? Mine is a day forward. I’m in New Zealand the date is the 9th Oct, facebook app on the iphone shows it as the 10th.

2)When messages were left is also not showing correctly. status show message left 20 hrs ago that were posted recently.

Anyone have any comment of this? These problems make the app WORTHLESS right now. Where can I go to get some answers?

  18. Rob Says:

@Wayne - I’m having the exact same issue in Aus. Apparently it’s 11 October today. It’s not even 11 Oct in NZ yet, so not sure WTF is going on.

  19. Adam Smith Says:

Events needs sorting out. It’s really hard to find out details of your events, invite people to your events etc.
