Good article. We realized we did not have the time to manage 10 ad networks and so are using mediageeks.com to manage our ads. We now focus all our time on trying to get direct advertisers.

There are now ad network optimization companies like Pubmatic.com and Rubicon Project which try to optimize the revenue for publishers across all the ad networks a publisher wants to consider. Check them out as they have shown revenue lift of 10-100% for some publishers. They also offer one interface for common reporting and analytics across all ad networks. Doing this optimization by yourself is such a pain and usually not the core business of the publisher!

But the main point remains that ad networks take a very high margin cut ranging from 10% for a small ad network to upto 70% for someone like Google. Publishers need to be more aware of this fact and act to get their fair share!!
