I just looked at my metrics for Halo 3 Players. It's a small app because I don't have the funds to advertise while the other (mind you, lesser) Halo 3 apps have a lot more users because of how much advertising they do.. About a week ago, my page views went up quite a bit and my new user marks have increased. I haven't done anything new to the app or promoted it in any way.. so I checked my Add/Remove tab of the metrics and saw that I was getting a HUGE boost from the Apps You Might Like section of the directory. Hopefully this holds true and helps out some of the 'little guys' who don't have the resources to push their app and don't believe in forcing users to invite people. I still don't have an Apps You May Like section in my directory, though.

@Michael Bauser: I don't think they were pushing recommendations in the sidebar.. that's just their ad space. Advertisers can target users based on age, sex, location, and keywords in your profile.. So those ads should display some applications that are advertising on the facebook ad network that are relevant to you. For instance, I have Halo 3 in my interests so every other pageview, i get an ad for one of the crappy Halo 3 applications...

They made the page length of the Application Directory shorter too (7 items per page). It's now much easier to page through the apps without scrolling.

I still don't see this helping small apps that are just starting out or that are popular within a niche. You'd still need to have a fair amount of traction already to benefit from this.
