Facebook CTO Adam D’Angelo Leaving

adam d\'angeloFacebook CTO and long time friend of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Adam D’Angelo, is leaving the company, Kara Swisher is reporting tonight. D’Angelo told co-workers in a letter Friday that he’s ready for a break and feels like his talents and interests are no longer the best fit for the job.

Facebook has confirmed the departure, but sources indicated to Swisher that instead of searching for a replacement CTO, the company is currently looking for a VP of engineering. D’Angelo, formerly a winner of the Top Coder programming challenges, has led many of the company’s technical efforts since 2005.

D’Angelo’s departure marks the latest in a rash of changes in Facebook’s front office this year. Earlier in the year, Chief Revenue Officer Owen van Natta departed the company for undisclosed reasons, and Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz recently changed his title to “Technical Lead” after rumored disagreements with Zuckerberg.

At the same time, Facebook has hired several top execs away from Google. Most recently, VP of Communications and Public Policy Elliot Schrage joined the company, a few weeks after Sheryl Sandberg joined as new COO.
