Facebook to suggest friends?

February 6th, 2008

Will Facebook Suggest Friends Soon? Will Facebook soon start letting you know when it thinks you may know someone you’re not yet friends with?

Nick O’Neill points out an item in Facebook’s notification settings that may suggest that such a feature is in the works. Because Facebook has so much of the social graph, they should be able to do a pretty good job making suggestions. Were that to be the case, this would be the first time Facebook has automatically suggested friends. Previously, Facebook has pushed using the “friend finder” feature to find friends you may not know you had on Facebook – it is essentially a contact list importer.

  1. Joey Tyson Says:

Actually, this option is listed under notifications as a possible action that a friend would take… note the other options right above it. This indicates that Facebook will somehow let you suggest people to your current friends, not that Facebook will be making suggesstions.

  2. Jamie Says:

Erm. It clearly says “Email me when someone *suggests a friend to me*”

i.e. I know that friend A knows friend C, but A and C are not friends yet. So I presume there will be a link on the profile to suggest this person to another friend.

  3. Cyndy Aleo-Carreira Says:

Nope… close, though. It’s already implemented. A friend joined the site and added me as a friend. When I confirmed her, Facebook asked me to suggest friends that we had in common that she might not know were on the site. Since it was a not-very-social-networking-literate friend, I went ahead and sent her the folks we have in common.

  4. Adam Dempsey Says:

Ah cool, I guess they will recommend friends who have a lot of friends in common with you and maybe even look at how they know each other, ie if you all know each other from school.

cool find, check out the help on this topic:

  6. Paul La Says:

But is there anything (a Facebook app perhaps) that generates suggestions of friends? Would be very cool…and one would think Facebook could easily do it based on the data mining already happening.

  7. Dan Says:

To suggest friends all you have to do is go to the person you want to suggest a friend to and go under their friends list and go all the way to the bottom and its got a link.
