3 Important Facebook Updates Coming Soon

comingsoon.jpgHere’s a quick look at some important Facebook updates that are expected to launch in 1Q 08:

1) Friend Lists Privacy Controls

A few weeks ago, Facebook took the first step toward enabling more efficient friend management with the release of Friend Lists. However, as was noted at the time, the killer feature of Friend Lists — Privacy Controls — was nowhere to be found. The good news is Facebook is working on this, and will allow users to control visibility for their profile, photos, and apps using Friend Lists soon.

2) Facebook in New Languages

It has been known for a while that Facebook is working on translating the site into a few new key languages. However, beyond this initial step, Facebook is planning an aggressive “crowdsourcing” approach to translate the site into dozens (if not hundreds) of languages around the world by harnessing the collective volunteer power of its user base. Soon, Facebook will launch a “Translations” app (which we saw briefly a couple weeks ago) whereby users can enter translations for every Facebook menu, button, and copy item. (To all Facebook users in Turkey: Facebook will be available in Turkish soon!!)

3) Blasting Messages to Groups With More Than 1,000 Members

Facebook marketers have been banging their head on the wall for a long time because of Facebook’s cap on the size of groups you’re allowed to blast messages to. This has caused many to migrate their group members to Pages, or even other websites, in order to enjoy more robust group communication tools. However, Facebook will soon be removing this ceiling, meaning Groups will become a more viable option for many grassroots marketers and large communities.

Fantastic! Facebook can now mass spam you in foreign languages and there’s no escape! What a leviathan. Thank goodness that there are still intimate, well managed communities on the ‘net like http://www.b4uparty.com

  4. Justin Thorp says:

Definitely excited to see these features launched. the Facebook in new languages sounds the most exciting. It’ll definitely increase their reach and allow for some potentially fun cross-cultural interactions.

  5. Jeremiah Owyang says:

Thanks for this, but what is your source?

It’s critical to mention where you get this information, the context is critical.

  6. Bart says:

There should be tools to convert Groups into Pages. Groups are around much longer and it’s hard to make users switch over from a Group to a Page if you would like to use the Page tools. Or they should add tools only available to Pages right now, to Groups.

  7. Joshua March says:

The third feature, removing the group size cap for messages, has been officially reported by Facebook, as has their translation app.

The privacy controls seem a natural extension of the friend lists, but I’d like to find out your source if possible.

    Thanks,

    Josh

  8. John Dowdell says:

Thanks to Jeremiah for the emphasis on sourcing stories.

(Me, I keep hoping Facebook adds a global way to describe your friending policy… those of us who had criteria such as “people I’ve actually met” had no way of conveying that to people we’ve met online, which is why I gave up on Facebook last year.)

  10. Nicole Simon says:

    Interesting, if through.

I thought they where serious about going for the global markets. In case of Germany for example, not only is there a major player already in place and set (already doubtful if they will get the users beyong a small margin), but having translation done by volunteers instead of going at least for the major markets by themselves seems stupid to me.

Using this for adaption for languages too small to fall into the adaption from facebook? That I believe at once and would make a lot of sense.

But for the major countries, I do not believe that.

  11. Nicole Simon says:

    *narf* true not through.

btw friends list – critized by some as being a waste of time – prove to be useful in the surrounding of languages and location.

I want to use them for separating “understands german only / english” and geo “is in Europe so can use this invite” / “is in the US” / “worldwide”.

Want as in once there is an easier way to manage that list. ;)
