Facebook lowers ad prices with performance-based Flyers Pro
September 16th, 2007
This week, Facebook launched a very interesting new advertising product called Flyers Pro. Flyers Pro sports two major differences from the previous Flyers (now Flyers Basic) ad product:
1) Targeting options are now more rich.
Advertisers can now not only filter by A/S/L, but also:
- Profile Keywords - such as “PS3,” “Gucci,” or more niche interests
- Workplace - such as “Google”, or anywhere else recruiters might want to hire away top talent
- Relationship Status - those in a relationship, single, engaged, or married
- Political Views - people who call themselves liberal, moderate, or conservative
- Current Education Status - those in high school, college or alumni
2) Pricing is now CPC as opposed to CPM.
This is a big deal, because click-through rates are so low in social networks - some as low as 0.1% or even 0.01%. Facebook recently quadrupled its Flyers CPM pricing from $0.50 CPM to $2.00 CPM - at a 0.1% CTR that’s $2.00 per click, which is not affordable for most advertisers.
Thus, Flyers Pro looks like it could offer significantly lower prices to Facebook advertisers than ever before. It will be interesting to see how much traffic early advertisers can get at cheap prices as the Flyers Pro marketplace develops!
(Of course, it should be noted that several Facebook Platform ad networks have offered CPC and CPA/CPI pricing for quite a while now. Purchasing traffic from specific applications will still probably be a better bargain than profile-targeted Flyers Pro traffic for some advertisers.)

That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t help if they don’t let you purchase the flyers! lol, I keep getting this error message;
There was an error with your payment information. Please correct the following:
* Please enter a valid CVV2 code.
* Please enter a valid address.
and yes, they are valid!

There’s one nasty change though. It appears that unlike the basic version, this version doesn’t allow the advertiser to target a specific network, so there’s no way for a local business to target Facebook users from the area. The “location” shown is basically a country. Don’t know what they were thinking when they did that. Seems pretty obvious to me that a Cincinnati bicycle shop would want to target people from Cincinnati whose interests include cycling.

Complete waste of time. I have had 5 accounts banned for no apparent reason. I meet EVERY requirement for TOS. How do you have a profitable PPC program if you ban everyone that advertises on it.

No kidding. It just sucks. They banned my account in less than 5 minutes putting up my ad. There is nothing offensive about it, in fact it is just advertising a contest to win prize.

Yes..this system is broken. I sent an email to support with my site to advertise and got the OK. Within 5 minutes of the ad live my flyer was banned along with my CC. Retarded and smart-ass customer service along with auto-banning for no reason. Worst roll out of anything by a multi-million dollar company I have even seen. STAY AWAY!!!

Same error message over here “Please enter a valid CVV2 code”. Tried 3 different valid Mastercards. Facebook’s Support says : “the error message that you are receiving indicates that your credit card is not passing our fraud protection system” and that I should contact my card issuer..

@Insidefacebook,
Maybe you can confirm this, it’s not possible anymore to advertise based on a person’s political or religious view?
the fields are gone in my facebook ad tool and I can’t seem to get a hold of it in the keywords.
