Coming Soon: Facebook in Your Language
August 6th, 2007
By now, Facebook’s penetration of American Internet life is well known…
- 90% of US college students have Facebook accounts, and half of them login every day.
- Professionals are increasingly migrating their professional networks from LinkedIn to Facebook.
- Facebook is increasingly replacing email as the default communications platform for informal messages between students and non-urgent messages between professionals.
However, less attention has been paid to Facebook’s growing international presence. While other social networks have dominant leadership positions across Europe, Australia, and Asia, Facebook’s penetration is on the rise — at least in the English speaking world…
- 11.4 million, or 33% of the Canadian population, has joined Facebook as of June 2007, making up over 10% of the total Facebook population.
- In Britain, London has become the largest geographic network (surpassing Toronto), now with over 880,000 users, representing about 10% of the city’s population.
- Facebook’s Australian population grew by 80% in June alone, while MySpace Australia grew 10%.
However, one glaring omission is inhibiting Facebook’s growth elsewhere: it’s only available in English. Only 50,000 Germans use Facebook (about 0.06% of a country of 80 million), and Asian numbers are nowhere to be seen. As a result, dozens of regionally-tailored knock-offs have sprung up in countries like China and Turkey in an attempt to beat Facebook to the punch.
But Facebook will be launching their first major localization initiative soon:
Zuckerberg: We haven’t translated the site yet, but that’s something we’re working on and it should be done soon. What we’re doing is pretty broadly applicable to people in all different age groups and demographics and places around the world.
Facebook will likely make their first push across western Europe (perhaps releasing Facebook translations in German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese), though the cultural divide that Zuckerberg alludes to is much bigger across the Pacific. More specifics soon.

Yeah Nicole is right. Some people are in no network, some only in Uni or work networks, but no regional network. For example I am German but I’m in the London network because most of my facebook friends are there.

StudiVZ.net has millions of users in Germany. Will facebook be able to easily break the hold they have on that country? or is this war?
p.s. studivz.net also has sites in poland, italy, spain, and france

Please release a version in Italian so I can use it with students!

“englishless” people will never try (or will try and leave immediately later) a service that don’t provide a localized interface.
I’ve many friends they don’t want to join FB because of that.
Meanwhile, same friends have found other places where they can find a localized environment (Orkut, Hyves, HI5, etc.).
When FB will move to a localized interface, these people will be already got used to another environment and hardly will move to something they have previously disliked.
So, localization will come soon (maybe: soon is a so generic word), will help and will add more users, but is already late for many other users, I guess
Many users don’t understand the difference between FB and any other Social Networking Service. They need to use FB to see the difference: is not enough to explain them why FB is better than others.
I know my next job will be to convince my friends to move back to FB
FaceBook, hurry up!
P.S.: sorry for my english: is bad, but enough good to not be afraid of FB

A Hungarian version would be welcome. There’s no localised international social networking sites available right now, so I think it’d be a good investment attracting quite a lot of people.
(There’s a Hungarian-only site, but its development has stalled long ago, its HR is clearly unmotivated and detached from the web2 world, and it’s slooooow as hell. (Do I hear “Java technology” from the background? lol))

please dont translate facebook into turkish, it will be abused wildly and most people will move elsewhere. although it is a natural right to ask one’s language to be applicable in facebook, being in english only definitely deters so many cro-magnons to disturb homo-sapiens’.
