Facebook Rockets Past 30 Million Users

Word out of Facebook is that as of this morning Facebook officially passed the 30,000,000 active user mark!
This marks a major milestone in Facebook’s incredible growth over the last year. The Facebook userbase has quadroupled from 7.5 million in July 2006 and spread from 20 million to 30 million in the last 3 months alone.
Clearly, Facebook’s decisions to open registration and open its platform are luring millions of new people to join the site. They’re coming from LinkedIn, they’re coming from MySpace, and going to Facebook.

Is that 30 million active or registered users? Could you define active, please?

I think the privacy implications of facebook are lost on the young people using the system. As a for profit business, facebook has access to a lot of personal information that can be used for marketing. Routinely posting on facebook not only reveals your habits, likes, product consumption but also your associations with other people, including their ages, geographical location, etc.

IIRC, an “active” user is one who has accessed Facebook within the last month. Something like 60% of active users are active daily.
