Congressman introduces bill to block Facebook
May 11th, 2006
“Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives have proposed legislation that would require schools and libraries to prohibit access to social networking sites.
The bill, introduced Tuesday by Rep. Michael G. Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania) and supported by members of a coalition of Republicans calling itself the Suburban Caucus, would oblige schools and libraries that receive federal support to implement systems that prevent minors from viewing obscene and objectionable material online.”

I don’t think that legislating prohibition at school will produce significant changes in how sites like Facebook and MySpace are used. If anything, it will only increase the digital divide, as students who only have computer access at school or libaries would no longer be able to access any website deemed “social networking.” danah boyd agrees.
But hey, it’s an election year.

I sometimes wonder how these people get elected… silly politicians (silly (non)-voters?)
June 9th, 2006 at 8:19 pm
Get real. Of course they are going to block MySpace and Facebook on school computers. Of course if you would all actually read the legislation instead of not having the facts and calling them “silly politicians” while your head is up your *** you’d know that this applies to any facility that allows Internet access through E-rate funding. Duh, you idiots don’t know what E-rate is either, right? And you call them silly non-voters! You are uninformed maggots that just want to live a fake life online. Sad, sad, sad. Before you go off with your unintelligent ranting be educated. Oh, but that may take time away chatting.

Reality Jones, your post was extremely rude. Why don’t you educate people instead of berating them for their supposed lack of education? You might also consider asking what motivated their posts, as perhaps their comments have nothing to do with their understanding of this legislation. Your harsh words make you sound supercilious and show that you do not understand the basic principle of “social” networking.

Absolutely right proposal. Students must use computers at schools for study purposes, not to chat with their friends.
